On Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:00 pm, Upton Hastings hosted a sex trivia event organized by Resident Assistant Zachary Murphy in collaboration with USM’s Confidential Resource Advisor, Sam Figard. The program aimed to spark open, informed conversations about sexual health in a setting that felt approachable and judgment-free.
At the center of the event was a 60-question Kahoot that quizzed participants on a wide range of topics related to safe sex and sexual wellness. Questions covered consent, sexually transmitted diseases, healthy relationship dynamics, contraception, and general sexual health knowledge. The trivia format kept the atmosphere upbeat and engaging, and the friendly competition encouraged students to think critically about topics that are often overlooked or stigmatized.
“I think encouraging students to talk about sex and breaking down some of the stigma of sexual relationships, consent, and sexual assault is very important to making a more integrated campus community and making residents more informed about these topics that will impact their lives,” Murphy said.
USM Health Services also played a role in shaping the program by contributing materials and supplying links to further educational resources. Their involvement ensured that the content was not only entertaining but also accurate and relevant.
Safer sex supplies such as condoms were offered to students for free, as well as informational material regarding things such as STIs. Snacks were also provided, and students were informed about USM Health Services and all the things they can do in terms of sexual wellness.
The evening’s event supported Residential Life’s November and December learning initiative: “Students will consider the importance of monitoring their sexual health and know the resources available to them.”
