Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great summer break this year, and you aren’t dreading this new semester too much. My name is Morgan, and I’m currently in my sophomore year, majoring in criminology. When I first came to USM last year, I ran into Lucille, our amazing office manager, running a table for The Free Press. She talked me up about all the benefits of being a journalist would have on applying to law school, which is my plan; fingers crossed. Quickly, I was convinced to give being a writer at The Free Press a shot. It was one of the best commitments I made during my freshman year, and I’m super happy I was able to be a part of it. From allowing me to experience unique events, to meeting new people, and giving me great opportunities, it was totally worth it. This year, I’m happy to say I’m returning not only as a writer but also as the web editor!

Three years back, I picked up video editing on Adobe After Effects. It started off as a struggle and took a lot of time to figure out, but since then, I’ve been consistently editing as a hobby. I mostly edit in a motion-graphic style, but sometimes I’ll try my best to combine elements from the typography and “jugg” editing styles together. Maybe that all sounds like a foreign language, but if there are any editors out there, you know what I mean! I’m really looking forward to implementing some of that editing and fun style into our website and social media platforms. If you see The Free Press on social media, don’t be shy about commenting or saying hi; we’re hoping to start posting more, and we’re excited to engage more with you guys over social media. Just remember, The Free Press always welcomes new faces, whether you’re in it for the experiences, people, or occasional free food, so don’t be afraid to reach out if you’re interested in being a part of the paper. Lastly, best of luck to everyone this semester!
