Welcome, or welcome back, Huskies! As the fall air begins to roll in, we get a chance to reconnect with one another and set our intentions for the upcoming year. I look forward to being more present in the moment, practicing patience, and being intentional about taking care of myself and my needs. I encourage you to set your intentions for the year, as well as hold yourself accountable to being conscious of them all year long. Our intentions not only help to set the tone for our year, but they can also guide us into becoming the greatest versions of ourselves in each given moment.Â
As the Director of Photography for the Free Press, I get the honor to capture your year in a way that tells a story through movement, color, expression, and connection. I get to capture you being present in each moment. I get to capture you practicing patience. I get to capture you taking care of yourself and your needs. Whether you’re on the front page or candidly in the background, I get to tell your story and help to define our year together.
Heading into my third year at USM as an ASL/English Interpreting student, double minoring in both Deaf Studies and Studio Arts: Photography, I have learned so much about myself and those around me, but I know I have only touched the surface of what I have left to learn. Coming all the way from Seattle, connection has always been incredibly important to me. The thought of being so far from home was so nerve-racking, but I was so excited to meet new people and try new things. Being a part of the Free Press has given me a sense of community and belonging, which I was scared I wasn’t going to find. You may be feeling similarly, but I assure you that there is a place here for you at USM.
I look forward to meeting many of you and continuing to better myself throughout this school year. I wish all of you a successful and fulfilling year, filled with academic achievement and positive personal growth. You can do hard things!
