A24’s films are known for being edgy, and this is certainly that. The Drama follows Zendaya & Robert Pattinson as Emma and Charlie, a happily engaged couple who are put to the test when an unexpected revelation sends their wedding week off the rails.
I have to say that one of my biggest issues with the film is the lack of investment in the couple’s relationship. The movie begins with a brief montage of wedding preparations that you would think warms you up to the pair before everything goes awry. Instead, something feels off from the beginning. I’m sure that was intended, but it made it so I didn’t really care whether the couple went through with a happy marriage or not. I also didn’t love the directing of certain shots where they’d cut back and forth in weird ways. There were some hand-held shaky camera moments that did work for me in some intense moments, however.
Many will find this film incredibly uncomfortable and possibly hate it. The big twist and central focus of the film handles some difficult subject matter, and many will argue not well. Intellectually, I liked the concept: the idea that discovering a new piece of information about a person’s past can change how you view them completely. It also tackles the concept of someone seeing something horrific online, thinking it “looked cool,” and just doing it. I just think it could’ve been executed better. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya were both great though, (Pattinson in particular), but let’s just say the wedding didn’t go as planned.
The Drama is now playing only in theaters.
