The University of Southern Maine is changing how library services are offered at its Lewiston-Auburn Campus (LAC), citing low use of physical lending and increased reliance on digital research tools, university officials said.
Marissa Bodnar, speaking on behalf of USM, said, “The University of Southern Maine (USM) remains deeply committed to the Lewiston-Auburn Campus and surrounding communities, even as we change how library services are delivered there.”
The LAC library will continue to provide quiet study space, computer access, and the campus food pantry. However, the university will move away from a traditional lending model after reviewing usage data. In 2025, fewer than three physical items per week were checked out on average, showing students increasingly rely on online databases and digital resources.
Beginning Monday, Feb. 9, one library staff member will relocate to the Gorham campus as specialized support is consolidated in Gorham and Portland. Digital library resources will remain accessible to all USM students 24/7.
Despite the staffing change, the library building will stay open for quiet study, and the computer lab and food pantry services will continue. Students in the in-person Occupational Therapy program will still receive research support.
Currently, official online library hours for LAC list the location as “closed” every day. It is unclear whether this reflects a website error, a policy change, or a technical issue. Students and community members are encouraged to confirm hours directly with campus staff.
Bodnar emphasized the importance of the library continuing to meet student and community needs. As the Lewiston-Auburn Library moves into a new chapter, students and community members can continue to access resources, study quietly, and engage with programs that celebrate the campus’s cultural and educational offerings.
