The 2026 awards season has now officially begun with both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes now having taken place. With just the BAFTA Film Awards and the SAG Awards left before the big night, we are well on our way to the 2026 Oscars.
Both the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes feature television as well as film, seeing many big wins for The Studio, The Pitt, and Adolescence. The TV awards season is more spread out, with the Emmys being held in June each year. However, the results of the film awards at these two ceremonies likely give us a tease of who may be the winners and losers of the 98th Academy Awards this upcoming March.
The Golden Globes saw no wins for either Frankenstein or Wicked For Good despite many nominations, and while the same is likely to be true at the Oscars, the two are expected to nab the craft awards (Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, etc.). KPop Demon Hunters took home both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden,” and it’s believed their winning streak will continue.
The big concern that I have about leaving the Golden Globes this year is that Sinners may be getting “Barbied.” Barbie was one of the bigger financial successes of 2023, and certainly the biggest blockbuster to be featured during awards season that year. However, despite many nominations, they only left with the craft awards, along with the Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, which seems to be a curse at this point. Barbie was the first winner of the Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, followed by Wicked, and now Sinners, pointing towards what many critics and audience members say is the best movie of 2025, suffering the same fate.
The only other big awards Sinners won this year so far are Best Original Score and Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler at the Critics’ Choice Awards, but the award went to Paul Thomas Anderson for One Battle After Another at the Golden Globes. Anderson also won Best Director at both ceremonies, and the film is predicted to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards after its wins here. The Golden Globes splits up a lot of their categories, so One Battle After Another did win Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, but Hamnet won Best Picture – Drama, and no one was more shocked than director Chloe Zhao.
As for the acting awards, Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards, but Teyana Taylor won the Golden Globe, so that race is still up in the air. Jacob Elordi was the Critics’ Choice for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Frankenstein, but after his win at the Golden Globes, Stellan Skarsgard is likely to win the Oscar, not only for his performance in Sentimental Value, but also as an overall career award. Wagner Moura won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in the Brazilian film The Secret Agent, making history as the first Brazilian man to win in that category, and the film also won Best Non-English Language Film. Jessie Buckley has won everything so far and will likely take home Best Actress at the Oscars as well. And it may finally be Timothee Chalamet’s year, taking home Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his performance in Marty Supreme at both ceremonies, and he may deservedly get that Oscar this year.
Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman on Thursday, Jan. 22, on Good Morning America.
