Hi, Huskies! I am incredibly excited and truly honored to be stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief for The Free Press for the 2026-2027 school year. As our lovely co-Editors-in-Chief, Julz and Caraline, prepare to graduate and begin the next chapters of their lives, we have some very big shoes to fill. I feel so grateful to have learned from their leadership and example.
This coming academic year, The Free Press will be led by both an Editor-in-Chief and a Co-Editor-in-Chief, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working alongside Olivia Fanjoy. Olivia is not only extraordinarily talented and dedicated in everything she does, but also one of the funniest people I know. I’m so excited for what we’ll accomplish together, and I am confident that it’s going to be an incredible year for the paper.
I joined The Free Press as a staff writer at the beginning of this school year, and from the very start, I was welcomed by some of the most supportive and inspiring people I’ve ever met. This group has taught me so much—not just about journalism, but about collaboration, creativity, and confidence. After some of our team members graduated at the end of the fall semester, I stepped into the role of News Editor, which has been such a meaningful and rewarding experience. Now, going into my third year at USM, I am honored to take on an even greater responsibility.
Looking back at where I started as a staff writer (which simultaneously feels like just yesterday and forever ago), I never could have imagined stepping into this role. That growth is a testament to this team and the environment it creates: one that encourages people to take risks, find their voice, and grow into leadership. It’s exactly the kind of opportunity I hope to continue creating for others.
I plan to lead with integrity, humility, and consistency, and to pour myself into continuing to make The Free Press the best it can be. I am committed to upholding the paper’s values of truth, accountability, and the amplification of student voices. I will continue to cover stories that matter, and I will not shy away from the difficult or important conversations and topics that deserve attention.
Writing has always been my solace. Whether it’s crafting short stories, poems, or articles, I love this form of art. Getting to pursue one of my passions in this way has been wonderful.
Aside from writing, I also enjoy karate, tennis, listening to true crime podcasts, reading, playing Animal Crossing, and spending time with my friends, family, and dogs.

At my karate school, one of our mottoes is, “Dream it, believe it, achieve it.” To me, this speaks to the power of both vision and belief. First, we have to imagine what’s possible. Then, we must believe in ourselves and have the courage and determination to pursue it. It’s a reminder that success doesn’t happen by chance, but through confidence, persistence, determination, and a willingness to put in the work even when things feel uncertain. With our dedicated staff and supportive readers, I truly believe that if we commit ourselves fully, there is no limit to what we can accomplish together.
Whether you’re a writer, photographer, editor, designer, or simply someone with something to say, The Free Press is a place for you. I encourage anyone who is interested to get involved; this paper is strongest when it represents all of us. There is always room for new voices, and you will always have a place here.
I’m so excited for what’s ahead and can’t wait to continue building something special with this team. Thank you for reading and for supporting The Free Press! Have an amazing rest of the semester, finals week, and summer break. Go Huskies!
