What’s happening at WMPG 90.9FM & Studio 51 Internet Radio
Hello USM community, and a big welcome to our new students from all of us at WMPG and WMPG’s internet-only radio service Studio 51!
WMPG is USM’s radio station, where, for 52 years, USM students and community members have been creating diverse, innovative, high-quality media, fostering the exchange of ideas and celebrating the many cultures of USM and surrounding communities for broadcast to the world!
WMPG is located at 92 Bedford Street on the Portland campus, broadcasting at 90.9FM on the radio dial. Studio 51 is on the Gorham campus @ 51 College Ave. Visit WMPG.org, where you can stream our broadcasts from either service and also find archives of every show from the last month and access our vast collection of podcasts. Over 200 volunteers power the stations, and we’re made up of USM students, USM alumni, and community members! Training is free to USM students in all aspects of radio and audio production.
WMPG/Studio 51 is dedicated to free speech, to non-commercial programming, and to preserving access to the broadcast airwaves for regular folks like us! There are music and talk programs produced by you and your fellow students. Music programming includes rock, reggae, hip hop, live local music, new music, indie, blues, jazz, global, folk, metal, electronic, psychedelic, Latin, African, soul, punk, funk, to name a few music genres. Talk shows cover public affairs, politics, food, beer, alternative health, movies, animal protection, culture, teen issues, vet issues, and more!
This year, we begin our 2nd year of offering an internet-only radio broadcast on the Gorham campus. It’s housed in the “Studio 51” building located at 51 College Ave., right next to Bailey Hall! We’ve partnered with the Theater Department, which is making radio theater recordings downstairs. WMPG’s Studio 51 is upstairs. If you are living on the Gorham campus, this is a perfect location to see what it is like to be a DJ and broadcast to the entire world! Come check out the Open House for Studio 51-Internet Radio on Monday, September 9th, at two different times: 11 am-1 pm and 4-6 pm.
Finally, to get your semester started right, WMPG and the USM School of Music are presenting McGoldROCKS 2025! There will be food and drinks supplied by USM’s Sodexo, plus a 21+ area. More info and registration link at wmpg.org. The concert is free, but tickets are required, so register early! Friends and family are welcome.
Work-Study: WMPG/Studio 51 is now accepting applications. If you have work-study with your financial aid package, check out what positions we’re hiring for at USM’s work study portal, or come to the radio station @ 92 Bedford Street on the Portland campus.
Volunteer: Don’t have work-study but still want to participate? No problem! Just drop in sometime, and we’ll give you a tour of the station and help you find a volunteer position, whether that is DJ, audio production, helping in our vast music library, or putting on events. We are always looking for USM students to find a place they can call home.
Podcasts: WMPG wants to help you create your very own podcast. Use WMPG’s equipment and studio space to record and edit your work. There are already a good number of podcasts on our site at WMPG.org, but WMPG welcomes many more. What’s your podcast idea?
Events: WMPG puts on events on campus and around town. Interested in having more events on campus, so are we! Currently, we present movies, open-mics, live bands, and more. Come learn event management!
There’s a place for you at WMPG, the little white house on the corner at 92 Bedford St on the Portland campus, and the white farmhouse at 51 College Ave in Gorham.
