Earlier this summer, the DC Cinematic Universe launched with Superman. Now, fresh off the film’s success, director/writer James Gunn has announced a follow-up. On Wednesday, September 3rd, Gunn took to social media to announce Man of Tomorrow, soaring into theaters on July 11th, 2027, less than 2 years after the release of the first film. We live in a world where that fast of a turnaround for a sequel is unheard of, but of course, years ago, it was far more common. Now, at this point, we’ll have two new Superman movies and a Supergirl film, all released between The Batman and The Batman Part II.
Accompanying the title and release date announcement was some wonderful artwork by legendary comic book artist Jim Lee. The artwork features not only David Corenswet as the man of steel himself, but also Nicolas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, who was the villain of the first film. This indicates that Luthor will return for the follow-up, and not only that, but that he will be sporting his green and purple armor featured in the comics. Other artwork released also seems to tease that while the long-time enemies will inevitably butt heads and battle once more, Man of Tomorrow may also see the two join forces to take on a larger threat.
Despite not being as big a financial success at the box office as hoped, Superman was a huge success among fans and critics, resonating with audiences through its message that “Kindness is the new punk rock”. It is quite encouraging to see Warner Bros. has the confidence in Gunn and DC Studios to move forward with more projects.
It’s so exciting to see this world already becoming incredibly interconnected in its first two projects (Superman and Peacemaker Season 2), and seeing that plans are already in place for even bigger crossovers less than two years from now. Everything included in this reveal would seem to suggest this is a straight-up Superman sequel, but James Gunn has said it’s not as straightforward. That begs the question, “Who is the Man of Tomorrow?” It’s a nickname often associated with Superman in the comics, but what if this time Lex Luthor himself is the ‘Man of Tomorrow’ and the movie could be told from his perspective? The film could also feature multiple Men/Women of Tomorrow, with rumors suggesting Jason Momoa’s Lobo will appear, alongside John Cena’s Peacemaker, and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. Aaron Pierre, who will be joining the DCU in next year’s Lanterns series, has also teased his involvement with the project. Will we see other classic Superman villains make their big-screen debut? Is this our chance for the long-awaited Brainiac? Or perhaps we’ll see Parasite or Bizarro? Mr. Mxzptlk may be too goofy for the tone of this movie, but he does seem to be a favorite character of James Gunn. Only time will tell.
2027 is set to be a big year for comic books and other nerd-dom films. Man of Tomorrow joins a lineup of tentpoles such as The Batman Part II, Star Wars Starfighter, Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse, Avengers Secret Wars, and a currently untitled Marvel film. There’s a
lot to be excited for in 2027, but James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow is surely at the top of many of our lists!
