Dear Huskies,
Welcome back to campus! Whether you’re a returning student or joining us for the first time—fresh from orientation and full of excitement—we’re so glad you’re here. On behalf of the entire Public Safety team, I want to extend our warmest wishes for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
USM Department of Public Safety aligns its operations with USM’s strategic vision that centers on People, Purpose, and Place, and that philosophy guides everything we do. Our department is comprised of sworn police officers, communications and dispatch personnel, campus safety officers, and emergency management professionals, all working together to foster a safe and supportive campus community.

People: You are at the heart of our work. Your safety, your voice, and your sense of belonging matter deeply to us. Our officers are here to build relationships, not just respond to calls—whether it’s sharing a conversation over coffee or walking alongside you during campus events, we are committed to being approachable, supportive, and engaged members of your community.
Purpose: We’re here to support your journey—from your first class to graduation day—by providing a safe and welcoming environment where you can thrive. Public safety is about more than emergency response—it’s about education, prevention, and partnership. We offer safety trainings, club presentations, and event support designed to empower you and enhance your experience on campus.
Place: USM is more than just a university—it’s your community. We’re proud to be a part of it and committed to making it a safe and inclusive space
for all. From winter “Be Safe Be Seen” safety campaigns to late-night safety escorts, our services are tailored to the needs of this unique place we all call home. We take pride in protecting the spaces where you live, learn, and grow.
We offer a wide range of services to support your safety and well-being, from community outreach, podcasts, and patrols to educational programming and emergency response. With Best Wishes from the entire USM PD team
