Welcome, new Huskies, and welcome back to our returning students! We’re excited to have you here, with campus buzzing once again.
This new academic year brings new opportunities, not just in the classroom but in how you approach learning itself. College is more than showing up to class; it’s about discovering the strategies that let you learn effectively, manage your time well, and feel confident about your progress. Think of it as building a toolkit you’ll rely on throughout your academic journey and beyond.
That’s where the Learning Commons comes in. Whether you want to sharpen your study strategies, boost your confidence heading into exams, or simply make better use of your time, we’re here t
o provide the guidance and resources you need. No matter how you’ve performed academically in the past, there’s always room to grow, and we’re ready to support you in taking that next step. The team at USM’s Learning Commons has outlined a collection of strategies to make the most of every learning situation. Every learner can become AGILE, which stands for Academic Gains through Improved Learning Effectiveness.
AGILE strategies give you practical ways to study more effectively, manage your time with less stress, and experience those “aha” moments when ideas finally click. By focusing on active practice, self-testing, and making connections between concepts, you can get more out of the time you spend in and out of the classroom. To get started, check out our AGILE Study Skills and Learning Strategies site (https://usm.maine.edu/learning-commons/study-skills-learning-strategies/) for valuable resources to start your semester strong. To further support you, we’ll also be sharing timely tips and strategies in every edition of AGILE My Inbox, our weekly newsletter delivered straight to your inbox.
In addition to AGILE strategies, the team at USM’s Learning Commons offers a v
ariety of resources and services throughout the semester to support your learning journey. For personalized assistance, schedule an appointment with our trained USM students, including Subject-Based Tutors, Writing Assistants, Peer Academic Coaches, Adult Learner Coaches, and Technology Coaches. Attend our academic workshops for an engaging experience to enhance your learning, posted on the Learning Commons website, Instagram, and Facebook (@usmlearningcommons). Visit our study spaces at the Learning Commons in Portland (2nd floor Glickman Library) or Gorham (1st floor Bailey Hall Library), where you can also find group study rooms for collaborating with classmates.
Learning is meant to be challenging, exciting, and fun. Embrace the journey, and
