Lindsey Vonn is one of the most decorated American Alpine skiers in history. She is known for her record-breaking 82 World Cup wins, as well as her comeback story. Vonn was the first woman to get 82 World Cup wins in 2019, as well as 146 World Cup Podiums, 7 World Championship medals, and 1 Olympic gold medal. Vonn is 41 years old and still wants to make a mark on the world, specifically through skiing.Â
As the 2026 Winter Olympics were rapidly approaching, Vonn announced that she was going to participate. This was shocking to the public not only because of her age, but also because she retired in 2019.Â
Six days before her admirable return to the slopes, Vonn announced that she had a ruptured ACL in her left knee. Most people would assume that this would mean Vonn was out for the Olympics; however, she made it very clear in her announcement that she will be participating. This was shocking to the world because a ruptured ACL is nothing to joke about. It is filled with an immense amount of pain and a serious recovery process after surgery. But that didn’t stop Vonn, and this was a true testament to the Olympic athlete that she really is.Â
The anticipated day had finally arrived, where Vonn was set to compete in the Women’s Alpine Skiing battle for gold. She was at the start with no sign that she even had a ruptured ACL. Her individual battle for gold was about to make history. As her gate was released, she started to rapidly pick up speed. However, 13 seconds into the race for gold, Vonn clipped a gate with her ski and went crashing down like a rag doll at 70 mph.Â
The whole audience went silent as they heard Vonn agonizing in pain. This was the end of Vonn’s run. She was airlifted to the hospital, where she found out that she suffered a complex tibia fracture in her right knee, just a week after she ruptured her ACL in her left knee. According to medical professionals, because of her ACL rupture, she was more likely to severely injure herself compared to if that were to happen when she were completely healthy.Â
A couple of days later, after Vonn recovered from her long, arduous repairment surgery, she put out a statement claiming that she was lucky to still have her leg. Her injury was so severe that they almost had to resort to a full amputation of the leg.Â
Reflecting on this injury, it is crazy to think about the extreme lengths an athlete will go to just to do the thing they love the most. In sports, an injury is your worst nightmare, but Vonn was able to push through her ACL rupture to hopefully win her last gold medal before retiring for good, but the universe had different plans, and it almost cost her a leg. This is why, as an athlete is always so important to take all injuries seriously, so that your career doesn’t get destroyed because of one failure in judgement.
