In South Africa, a strategy is 6 years in the making to protect rhinos from poaching. The Rhisotope Project involves embedding non-harmful radioactive isotopes into the horns of rhinos. This makes it impossible for them to be trafficked across borders due to existing infrastructure at seaports and airports to prevent nuclear terrorism and proliferation.
A man who dreamed he died of a heart attack took it as a sign and was soon diagnosed with a dangerous heart condition. Jeremy Schwartz had a dream in which he suddenly died of a heart attack while in the midst of an upcoming hike. Despite being in seemingly great health for a 63-year-old, after waking from his dream, Schwartz immediately booked an appointment with a cardiologist. After multiple scans and tests, Schwartz was told he had a serious, life-threatening heart condition. He then underwent open-heart surgery to replace his diseased aortic root while preserving his own aortic valve. This surgery saved his life.
Getting out of an abusive relationship is vital, yet packing up and moving out is more than daunting, and oftentimes, dangerous. But thanks to Meathead Movers, it’s much easier, and doesn’t cost a dime, to leave a spouse or partner behind and start a new future. For 25 years, California’s largest independently-owned moving company has been helping end domestic violence in their state by offering their moving services for free to those who need it. Even better, they launched a coalition in 2015 that attracted eight other moving companies in the United States to join them in their mission. The program they launched, #MoveToEndDV, has inspired over 200 businesses to pledge free services for domestic violence survivors–from moving to self-storage, and even security companies in three California cities that will send a guard during your move.

China and India slow down coal. For the first time in years, electricity generation from fossil fuels is falling in China and India. Despite rising demand, both countries are massively expanding solar and wind power. This is a potential turning point for the global climate, if the trend continues.
Seven million people’s cancer could be prevented each year. A study found that the big three contributors to more than 18 million cancer cases around the world were found to be:
- smoking tobacco, which caused 3.3 million cancers
- infections, causing 2.3 million cancers
- alcohol use, which led to 700,000 cancers
Dr. Andre Ilbawi, team lead for cancer control at WHO, said the study was “good news” as it showed something could be done, and he pointed to the success of countries that have introduced policies to tackle smoking or vaccinate against HPV. He said, “The percentage of preventable cancers can change over time and our goal is to get it as close to zero as possible.”
