On Friday, September 19, the University of Southern Maine held a moving POW/MIA flag-raising ceremony at the Gorham Campus to honor Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action. Students, staff, faculty, and community members gathered at the flagpole by Corthell Hall to reflect on the sacrifices of service members and the values they represent.
The ceremony featured the USM ROTC cadets presenting the colors and raising the American flag, accompanied by music from Ryder-Rose Haines of the School of Music. President Edmondson and her husband, Michael, a veteran, joined the event, along with Dean of Student Affairs Rodney Mondor, who reminded the audience of the courage and commitment of those being honored and the importance of carrying their legacy forward in campus life and beyond.
Major Mitchell reflected on the significance of the day: “This is the first POW/MIA remembrance I’ve ever attended. Veterans play a vital role in our campus community and our nation, and their commitment extends beyond military service—it’s a lifelong dedication to uphold the promise to never leave a fallen comrade behind.”
Student veteran Nate Twombley, founder of the Memorial Muster Foundation, shared stories of POWs and MIAs, highlighting their resilience, service, and the lessons their experiences offer for community and unity.
The ceremony closed with a moment of silence and the commemorative playing of Taps by Ryder-Rose Haines, as ROTC cadets respectfully lowered the flag. Major Mitchell offered final reflections, reminding all in attendance of the enduring importance of remembering and honoring those who have served and sacrificed.
