In a significant move for both the town of Gorham and Amazon, the Gorham Town Council voted on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025 to approve the sale of 93.9 acres of town-owned land to the tech giant for $4 million. The decision, which passed by a 5-2 vote, came after a meeting that drew more than 50 residents and community members.
The parcel, located along Main Street (Route 25), is part of a larger 141-acre property purchased by the town in 2019 for the same $4 million price. At the time, Gorham officials anticipated strong demand for industrial land, but when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, the market slowed, leaving the property unsold for several years.
“We’ve been trying to sell this land for years,” council chairperson Suzanne Phillips said.
The vote authorizes Town Manager Ephrem Paraschak to execute the necessary paperwork to move the deal forward. Yet the decision has not come without controversy. Council member Seven Siegel, who voted against the measure, voiced concerns about the company’s reputation. “This feels like a devil’s bargain,” Siegel said. “A large company is going to bring in a lot of revenue, but it’s Amazon. I’m not a fan of Amazon.”
Adding to the tension, the decision was made without a designated public comment period, leaving some residents frustrated that they had no direct opportunity to weigh in before the vote.
Despite this, other council members and town leaders emphasized potential benefits. They anticipate increased property tax revenue, which could help offset costs for residents, along with new jobs that might be created both within Amazon and in local businesses that serve the company’s operations.
Still, the sale is far from finalized. Amazon has not disclosed specific plans for the property, though town officials believe the company is likely to propose a warehouse or distribution center. Any such development would need to undergo a full review process.
Thomas Poirier, Gorham’s director of community development, underscored that point. “Just because we have a contract doesn’t mean that they are, in the end, going to buy it,” he stated. “They won’t own it until they get all their approvals.”
The uncertainty has contributed to a divide among residents. Opponents of the decision have raised concerns about traffic congestion, the potential strain on local infrastructure, and broader issues related to Amazon’s ethics, such as treatment of its workers and environmental practices. Supporters, however, argue that the development could bring long-term economic growth.
Reactions in the community reflect this split. Speaking with WGME, Gorham resident Carol Molchior expressed strong opposition. “Jeff Bezos and Amazon have way too much power. The thought of them exerting even more power in my own neighborhood makes me sick to my stomach,” she said.
On local social media forums, residents continue to debate the deal. Some argue that the $4 million sale price is far too low given Amazon’s size and financial resources, calling it a “giveaway” to a trillion-dollar company. Others take the opposite viewpoint, saying that after years of sitting vacant, the land could finally generate revenue and attract new families and businesses to Gorham.
The vote also highlights broader questions about how small towns in Maine balance local values with economic opportunity. For a community like Gorham, the arrival of a global company such as Amazon could reshape the town’s identity as much as its economy. For now, the land sale represents only the first step in what is expected to be a lengthy and closely watched process.
As the permitting stage unfolds, residents will have additional opportunities to make their voices heard. Whether Amazon ultimately builds in Gorham or not, the council’s decision has already sparked a conversation about growth, responsibility, and the kind of future the town envisions for itself.
Gorham Town Council meetings take place on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM at Gorham Municipal Center. The next meeting will be on Oct. 7, 2025.
