McGoldROCKS! has only taken place once before, but it has returned! Hosted by WMPG, the free event took place in the studios on the second floor of McGoldrick on October 9th. Four acts performed that night, which were played live on air, and live interviews were conducted over the air throughout the night. Even I was interviewed! In between sets, the emcee for the night, Jack Hutton, told jokes and interacted with the audience, while WMPG workers printed t-shirts by request right outside. There was a live ASL interpreter, a bar, a water station, and a merch booth for all the acts of the evening. Starting at 6 pm and ending at 9:30 pm, the event invited people of all ages to McGoldrick to rock out with WMPG.
The emcee for the evening, Jack Hutton, works at WMPG and hosts his own show, “No Longer Dangerous,” which airs on Thursdays from 8:30 to 10 am. Neal Jay (and his band), Little Oso, Covered in Bees, and One Hundred Thorns all played that night. Ranging from death punk rock to dreamy indie-rock, there was a little bit of everything for everyone at this event. Each of the acts performed with enthusiasm and emotion, despite the lack of movement in the room. However, that’s due to seating being available and standing not being incentivized. The live interviews I previously mentioned were conducted live on WMPG, with the help of the Blunt Youth Radio Project. Random people at the event were pulled in and asked a few questions live, myself included. It was pretty popular while it was happening, and everyone loved it, but it only lasted for the first two hours of the event. There was a lot of love for WMPG that night, and this event, despite its small size, clearly captivated the attendees. This annual event continues to showcase local bands and artists to new fans.
