Tom Holland is back for the first-ever fourth installment in a live-action Spider-Man film franchise. Spider-Man Brand New Day catches up with Peter Parker four years after the events of No Way Home, where everyone’s memory of Peter was erased. Now living alone, with no friends, no girlfriend, and no Stark technology, broken and bruised, we’re seeing a back-to-basics friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Fans couldn’t be happier that this iteration of Peter Parker is finally depressed and alone. Brand New Day kicks off a new trilogy for Holland’s Spider-Man, now under the direction of Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton recently noted that during the process of making the film, “Spider-Man” was his son’s first word.
Sony Pictures recently debuted the first official trailer for the film online, and compared to most trailers nowadays, it seems a bit late in the game, releasing just about four months before the film’s release at the end of July. It seemed to work out, though, as Spider-Man Brand New Day’s trailer has become the first ever trailer in history to cross 1 billion views. That’s a pretty big accomplishment, and completely deserved, as it packs a lot into an almost three-minute trailer, without revealing too much at the same time.
Peter, in this film, is going through a change. It seems he’s going through some sort of mutation that could result in him receiving organic webbing, opposed to his usual man-made webshooters. Some fans are even hoping this could lead to seeing a live action version of Man-Spider. This sort of “Spider-Puberty” leads him to Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who seemingly works as a professor at Peter’s college. It’s rumored his Hulk will have a return to form in Brand New Day with his more savage side unleashed, possibly even as the Gray Hulk. Fans believe actor Keith David’s voice can be heard in the teaser, an unconfirmed actor for the film, but it has led to speculation on his involvement. Leading theories point to either a new adaptation of Dr. Curt Conners (The Lizard) or Dr. Miles Warren (The Jackal).
Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher from previous appearances in both Netflix and Disney+’s Daredevil series, making his film debut. The Punisher made his comics debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #129, so it’s cool to see him featured here. He’ll be a sometimes antagonist, but inevitably reluctant ally to Peter as he prevents Frank from taking lethal action against their foes. The trailer teases an impressive lineup of villains, including Scorpion (Played by Michael Mando), Boomerang, Tarantula, and even The Hand (A cult of ninjas known for fighting Daredevil). Marvin “Krondon” Jones III has also been confirmed as Tombstone.
There are two more casting mysteries. Severance star Tramell Tillman features in the trailer and will seemingly also be a foe to Spider-Man, but his role is currently unknown. The biggest mystery of all, however, is Sadie Sink. Sink was announced as part of the cast early last year and has even been confirmed for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. She’s clearly playing an important character to the future of the MCU. But who? Personally, I would love it if she were playing Firestar, but I’m doubtful that’ll be the case. She seems to be a villain, possibly the main villain, as she receives third billing in the film following Tom Holland and Zendaya. The prevailing theory is that she will portray the MCU’s Jean Grey, building towards the next X-Men reboot.
Spider-Man Brand New Day releases in theaters July, 31st.
