Welcome to the first installment of Dinners, Dhalls, and Divas, in which two college students (sans any real qualifications) review dining hall food.Â
On Tuesday, Feb. 17, Caydince Bumpus and Makayla Morello entered the dining hall in search of food for review. On the menu that night? A Lunar New Year-inspired meal, consisting of egg drop soup, spring rolls, stir fry, white rice, and vegetables. Ambitious. Promising. Festive. Let’s discuss.
First, a surprise contender: crab rangoon pizza. YUMMY. A solid Sodexo 7.5/10. Honestly, no notes, other than it being slightly too cream cheese-forward, in my humble opinion. The veggies and white rice were good, but I guess it’s hard to mess those up. Can’t go wrong! The stir fry was not bad, but it definitely could have benefited from some actual seasoning… just a thought.
Now. The spring rolls. We were DISAPPOINTED. As girls who enjoy a good spring roll, why was it squishy? Why did it feel like you could cheese-pull the spring roll? Please explain. Makayla has consumed a decent amount of frozen, microwavable spring rolls (Caydince, not so much), and will venture to say that even a mediocre spring roll should have some crispiness to it.
Going into the dining hall on this fateful night, we really did hope for the best, some optimism intact. However, why was the chicken squishy? Why? Chicken should not be that texture; we were scared. At least the chicken seemed cooked (maybe a little too cooked). Upon putting my plate of chewed chicken on the conveyor belt, nearly every plate we saw still had lots of chicken on it, so take that as you will.
Overall rating? Mixed emotions. High highs (crab rangoon pizza), confusing lows (the chicken haunts us). Stay tuned for our next culinary critique, because if no one else is going to say it, the Divas will.
Makayla’s rating of the night’s meal: 5.5 huskies out of 10
Caydince’s rating of the night’s meal: 7.5 huskies out of 10 (two huskies primarily because of the Mountain Dew).
