Back in the days of cable, the traditional TV season began in the fall. Now, streaming is king, and we’re getting great content throughout the year. However, I’ve noticed in recent years, the February-April timeframe brings us some of the best series of the year. In fact, I did a very similar article this time last year as well. It’s really great being in times like this, where you can get a new episode of a different show you’re currently watching almost every day of the week. And if you’re someone who’s not watching all this great television, then it’s time to get you in the loop!
Let’s kick things off with my favorite show on TV right now, Shrinking. From Ted Lasso creator Bill Lawrence, Shrinking returns for its third season on Apple TV+. This show is so good. What’s more interesting than therapists who themselves need therapy? It’s a great cast featuring Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Michael Urie, and Jessica Williams, who all have stunning chemistry. Shrinking is a hilarious dramedy that will make you laugh so hard throughout every episode, but also probably cry every episode as well (Both tears of joy and sadness). The quality of the show never dips, and is so consistent and beautiful that Harrison Ford has said that he wants the last thing in his career to be this show, and he’ll keep doing as many seasons as it takes to make that happen. Shrinking is always a great way to start off my Wednesday mornings! I’m sad season 3 is almost over, but season 4 has already been greenlit!
HBO Max is bringing us some great content right now as well. The Pitt is wrapping up its last few episodes of season two on Thursdays, while DTF St. Louis and Rooster are sharing the primetime Sunday evening airtime. I have to say that I was a little disappointed by Rooster. It’s another Bill Lawrence show, stars Steve Carell, features some other actors I love, and even takes place at a college, so I thought I’d love it. It’s alright. DTF St. Louis, on the other hand, is really great. The amazing cast drew me in initially (Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Linda Cardellini), but the concept got me hooked. It’s a great true-crime feeling drama, with sprinkles of hilarious comedy throughout an unraveling murder mystery.
Peacock and Paramount Plus are probably two of the more under-the-radar streaming services. I subscribe to both, but I honestly can’t remember the last time I used Paramount Plus, and Peacock I mainly use to watch reruns of old sitcoms. However, Peacock recently brought us the long-awaited Ted Season 2. The Ted series is even better than the movies, bringing us adult humor through a ‘90s sitcom lens. The cast is perfect, the episodic format works so well, and the CGI on Ted is seamless. Unfortunately, it’s been confirmed that the series will not return for a third season because the budget is so high. Seth McFarlane has confirmed that there will be an animated series releasing later this year, so here’s hoping that it can still capture the magic.
For those superhero fans, we’ve also got some great shows right now with Invincible season 4, and Daredevil Born Again season 2. Invincible returns for its fourth season on Amazon Prime Video, and while I’m still enjoying it, I’m not enjoying it quite as much as previous seasons so far. We are just four episodes in, so I’m sure that will change. Daredevil Born Again had its season 2 premiere last week and is already feeling closer to the tone of the original Netflix series. Critics are saying the season really hits the gas after episode 3, and luckily for us, we’re getting both episodes 2 and 3 next week! Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio are perfect as always, but it’s nice seeing other characters that weren’t as well-liked in the first season, suddenly developing far more interesting storylines. Matthew Lillard makes his MCU debut, and he may already be one of my favorite characters. I’m also very excited to see Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye take on a larger role this season as well.
If reality TV is your thing, I’m sure you’ve been watching the latest season of The Masked Singer or Survivor’s big season 50. I’ve been continuing to watch Saturday Night Live, alongside the recently premiered Saturday Night Live UK, which debuted its first episode last week.
As all these great shows continue, there’s also more to look forward to in April with Euphoria, Hacks, The Boys, Beef, Star Wars: Maul-Shadow Lord, and Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. Movies tend to get all the big buzz, but I feel like TV is the easier content for college students to consume from the comfort of their dorm room. So go watch some TV, because there’s some great content to catch up on this spring!
