Jayson Tatum is a 28-year-old American basketball player. He plays for the NBA team the Boston Celtics, and has been their star player since he was drafted in 2017.
On May 12th, 2025, during the Eastern Conference Semifinals, Tatum sadly ruptured his Achilles, which, according to doctors, is one of the most painful sports injuries that can occur. Less than 24 hours after the rupture, Tatum was rushed into surgery and was given a full Achilles repair. The star player then went on to miss the rest of the 24-25 season, after just the year before winning the NBA Finals. The entire Celtics fandom was devastated because we all had no idea what this would mean for the 25-26 season. Some other players who experienced this injury in the NBA took around 14-18 months to return to the court.
But just over 10 months since Tatum’s tragic injury, he makes his epic return to the TD Garden. This fast of a recovery was considered “A rapid, top-tier recovery…”, according to NBC Sports Boston. He made his 25-26 season debut on March 6th, 2026, against the Dallas Mavericks and Maine native Cooper Flagg. In this game, he didn’t hold back. Tatum was putting up stats like his injury never even existed. There were absolutely no signs that Tatum had lost any of his “star player” instincts. During his ultimate return, he put up 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in 27 minutes of playing time to help secure Boston’s win over Dallas.
Comparing Tatum’s stats from the 9 games he has played in this season to his stats from 72 games last season, there is no debating that Tatum is an elite player. Even with his post-injury return, his average for points per game through 9 games is 20, whereas his average points per game through 72 games last season was 26.8. Even though Tatum is not fully where he was last season, there is no denying that Tatum is ready to reclaim his rightful place within the Boston Celtics.
Much like Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton, from the Indiana Pacers, ruptured his Achilles only a month after Tatum. However, Haliburton has yet to make a return to the court. Many reports online have ruled him out for the rest of the season with 100 percent certainty. This just proves how resilient and determined Tatum has been in his recovery process to return to the court.
In the absence of star Jayson Tatum, another key asset to the Boston Celtics has stepped up and really proven himself as a leader of the team: Jaylen Brown. Brown has been dominant on both sides of the floor. This season, Brown tied Celtics Legend Larry Bird for 9 consecutive games with 30+ points, which is the most in Celtics franchise history. This season, Brown is averaging 28.5 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game. He has not only come back as a different player than last year, but he has filled the shoes of Tatum in his absence. And as for the whole team, they have really taken Tatum’s minutes and come together as a very strong, cohesive team. I believe that the current state of the team is the most united it has been since the 2024 Finals win.
So what does this mean for the 2026 NBA Finals? Well, this means the Boston Celtics have an incredible shot at making it to the Finals in general, and maybe even winning. Many players have taken larger roles on the team, like Peyton Pritchard, Derrick White, Sam Hauser, and their big man, Neemias Queta.
With the return of Tatum and the MVP performance from Brown this season, I believe there is much hope for the Boston Celtics. With only 10 games in the regular season remaining and the playoffs quickly approaching, the Celtics are seeded number 2 in the Eastern Conference. It is exciting to see what Tatum and Brown will provide to the Celtics fandom for the remainder of the season. While we hope it is a Finals win, we also know that this has been a historic season already, and they have given us many things to look forward to.
