Academic Council for Post-Holocaust Christian and Jewish studies offers two new courses

The Academic Council for Post-Holocaust Christian and Jewish Studies is offering two fall courses which examine Jewish/Christian conflicts. “Jews and Christians in Conflict: From the ‘Teaching of Contempt’ to Nosta Aette,” will examine how a negative image of Judaism developed in Christianity and why.

AmeriCorps looking for students

Only one application was received for a program seeking a minimum of 12 USM students to be community service leaders in 2002-2003 through the AmeriCorps Education Award Program.

Undergraduate students who sign up receive a federal grant of $1,000.

Gorham sexual assault

The University released a community warning after a sexual assault was reported last week in Gorham.

The victim contacted police last Sunday reporting she had been sexually assaulted at an off-campus party. Police would not release the exact location of the incident or say if there are any suspects because the case is still under investigation.

High-tech dummy

The College of Nursing gets high-tech with a new mannequin that mimics the needs of an infant. The model cries and expresses hunger, and has a machine that simulates the sounds of a beating heart.

The new equipment will be on display at an open house held from 9 a.

Professor passes on

A former USM faculty member, John Romanyshyn, died March 15. Romanyshyn was professor emeritus of social work. He joined USM faculty as a professor of social work in 1967, after teaching at UMO from 1946 to 1967. He was the first chair of USM’s undergraduate Social Work Department.

Bioscience groundbreaking

Members of the campus community are invited to a ground-breaking ceremony for the Bioscience Research Addition to the Science Building in Portland at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22.

The ceremony will take place at the site adjacent to the Science Building on Falmouth Street.

Surveys look at student health behaviors

The College of Nursing and University Health Services formed a partnership. Over the next three semesters they will be focusing on the health needs of students at USM. This semester juniors in the College of Nursing will be distributing a survey to 2,100 randomly selected students.

Service Valentines Project

It’s time to make the Valentine cards. On Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Brooks Student Center in Gorham, Circle K is sponsoring a service project for all students. Valentine cards will be made for the Jack Elementary School. The Jack students currently go to school in a converted office building on Congress Street.

It’s almost spring

The Gorham and Portland events boards have teamed up to begin planning The Spring Fling to be held on April 19 from noon to midnight on the Gorham campus. “The Spring Fling is its tentative name,” said Jon Taylor, Portland Events Board chair.

Rodney’s going Greek

Sigma Phi Epsilon gave a special invitation to a non-Greek member of the USM committee to join its national organization.

Rodney Mondor, Greek advisor and assistant director of student involvement, is a counselor and advisor for Greeks and handles Greek matters in Gorham, but is not a Greek himself.

Portland Commuter Life and Co-Curricular Programs at the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland is asking for board game donations. Board games are currently available at the Information Desk for students to sign-out and play with in the campus center.

Parking/ RHA

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is sponsoring a meeting Monday, Dec. 3 in Gorham addressing the issue of parking on the Gorham campus.

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to attend the meeting to state their concerns about parking, ask any questions, and voice any suggestions for improvements.
