A Performative Male contest was held by RA Gabe and RA Maddie in the courtyard of the Portland Commons on Sept. 11. “Performers” dressed in their best performative male attire, including tote bags, matcha lattes, string headphones, and even a labubu. Fittingly, Urban Dictionary defines performative males as one “who reads books by women authors, drinks matcha, and carries a tote bag (bonus points if it’s artsy) with a labubu pinned to it…he likely listens to indie artists like clairo…Whether or not he understands the feminist themes is up for debate.” Honorable judges Gabe and Maddie asked each performer this set of questions:
Who is your favorite female role model?
Answers included Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama.
Who is your favorite female author?
Answers included “all of them” and Suzanne Collins.
Who is your favorite musician?
What’s your view on period products being free?
What’s your favorite pastime?

When asked if he was a performer, Max, freshman, said that he wasn’t just performing, it was his lifestyle. Max won the contest, winning a stuffed animal called a Fuggler. The two second-place winners, Elijah (Tyler), sophomore, and Andre Morin, sophomore, each won a miniature-sized Fuggler.
