Rainbow Kitten Surprise. No, these are not the words of an interesting game of charades or the name of an old childhood book. It’s actually the name of the four-member band formed out of North Carolina. Myself and a few of my friends had the pleasure of seeing RKS on September 17th at Thompson’s Point in Portland. The atmosphere was safe and welcoming, while the venue staff and security were engaging and fun. The band Medium Build opened for them at the riverside venue. Despite somehow never listening to Medium Build before, I was captivated by their lyrics and felt a sense of connection with the songs they played. Rainbow Kitten Surprise came out strong in their first song, called Peter Pan. Midway through, lead singer Ela abruptly put her hand up to stop the lights and music when she saw people drawing attention to a fan having a medical emergency. This didn’t stop the band from putting on an amazing performance; their 23-song setlist was loud, bright, and exciting. Of course, they came back for the encore and ended an amazing show with their most popular song, with nearly 450 million plays on Spotify, “It’s Called Free Fall.”
