By Emilyn Smith, Director of Photography
Conveying messages through art is something that’s always been important to me. Not only am I able to tell others’ stories through photojournalism, but I can also shed light on important social issues and become a voice for those that may not have their own. My goal is to insight conversations through the frames I take and the stories I get the opportunity to share.
My name is Emilyn Smith, and this is my second year as the Director of Photography at The Free Press! Coming all the way from Seattle, Washington, I was nervous to be so far from home, but the Free Press is a community I know I will always be welcomed in. I began my journalism journey during my sophomore year of high school after joining my high school’s award-winning yearbook team and I fostered such a strong passion for meeting people from all walks of life and getting a glimpse into their lives by telling their stories through photography, graphic design, and writing. I am currently entering my sophomore year at USM, studying ASL/English Interpreting and double minoring in Deaf Studies and Studio Art: Photography. I look forward to building the Free Press team even stronger this year and I hope to add depth to my peers’ articles by creating intriguing photos and sharing my love for the camera. Continue the hard work, and I wish all of you a happy and healthy year!
