Awareness for September
By Caydince Bumpus, Community Editor
Some of the things discussed here may activate some strong emotions. Please read with caution. September brings awareness to many different causes, and each one that will be talked about is important and should be shared.
- Suicide Prevention and Awareness: with summer coming to an end and the colder months getting closer, it can be easy to fall into that unhealthy mindset, especially when you’re cramming for classes. USM is filled with people who care about your well-being. If you feel like things are getting a little out of your control, please do not hesitate to call USM counseling services at (207) 780-4050. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to someone you don’t exactly know, try reaching out to a trusted peer or professor.
- National Recovery: USM offers a wonderful selection of support groups at The Recovery Oriented Campus Center, otherwise known as ROCC. ROCC offers peer-led support groups, including an all-recovery group, a group for women of color, and a group called Mindful Men. Along with support groups, events are also offered to the USM community. To learn more about ROCC and how it could help you, visit the University of Southern Maine website.
- Self-Care Awareness: the first few weeks of college is where unhealthy habits typically can begin forming, especially for first year college students. It is important to keep a good sleep schedule. Yes, schoolwork is important, but so is getting a good night’s rest. Remember to eat. It can be pretty easy to forget basic necessities while living and learning on your own time. Take time for yourself. You don’t need to be busy doing things all the time. Recognize when you need to relax. Burnout is right around the corner if you don’t prioritize your well-being.
Important and mentionable awareness topics for September: Hispanic Heritage Month, Prostate-Health Month, and Blood Cancer Awareness Month.
