Starting college can be both exhilarating and overwhelming, but don’t worry! We have compiled some valuable tips to ensure your success at USM.
- Embrace the New
As you step onto our campus, embrace the diversity of opportunities and experiences available. Participate in orientation activities, join clubs and organizations, and attend campus events. This is the time to discover your passions and create lifelong connections!
- Connect with Your Peers
Building a supportive network is crucial for your success at USM. Don’t hesitate to connect with your fellow Huskies – they’re all here to share experiences, support, and friendships. Attend study groups, engage in conversations, and take part in campus discussions. The connections you make now can last a lifetime!
- Utilize Campus Resources
USM offers an array of resources designed to help you thrive academically and personally. Students can visit the Learning Commons to access subject-based tutoring and writing assistance services, talk to the Career & Employment Hub for career exploration services, and take advantage of Counseling Services to pursue mental health & wellness. We are here to support your holistic development throughout your time as a Husky!
- Learn Time Management Skills
College life can be fast-paced, so mastering time management is important. Create a schedule that balances academic commitments, personal life, and self-care. Prioritize your assignments, stay organized, and avoid procrastination – it will help you succeed in both your academic and personal endeavors.
- Explore Academic Opportunities
USM offers a wide range of academic programs and courses. We recommend that you take your time to explore different subjects and fields! You might consider taking electives outside of your major to broaden your horizons & discover new interests, and seek guidance from academic advisors to plan a fulfilling & successful academic journey.
- Engage with Professors
Our faculty members are educators and mentors eager to guide you in your academic pursuits! Don’t hesitate to visit their office hours, ask questions, and seek their expertise. Building a rapport with professors can enhance your learning experience and open doors to research and internship opportunities.
- Practice Self-Care
College life can be demanding, but taking care of your physical and mental well-being will help you to successfully complete coursework while engaging in campus life. Get enough rest, maintain a balanced diet, and engage in regular physical activity. Remember to take breaks and find healthy ways to manage stress. The better you feel, the better you can handle challenges and excel!
- Get Involved in Service-Learning
USM values community engagement, and we encourage you to participate in service-learning opportunities. Engaging in volunteer work not only benefits others but also fosters personal growth and a sense of fulfillment. To get involved, reach out to the Career & Employment Hub for more information about service-learning & volunteering opportunities!
- Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity
At USM, we believe that failure is a stepping stone to success. Don’t be disheartened by setbacks; instead, see them as opportunities to learn and grow! Resilience is a valuable skill that will serve you well throughout your academic journey and beyond.
- Enjoy the Journey
Lastly, remember that your time at USM is a unique and transformative experience. Enjoy every moment, make cherished memories, and savor the learning journey! Embrace the challenges and triumphs, as they will shape the person you become.
