Dear USM Students,
I am quite pleased to welcome you back to the new academic year, my second year as your president. This is an historic moment at our University as we open the McGoldrick Center for Career and Student Sucess and the first residence hall in Portland. You may notice the orange construction fencing on our Portland Campus, which marks the beginning of the new Center for the Arts. Our Lewiston-Auburn Campus is now a Health Education Corridor, which connects us to the Lewiston-Auburn community through our programs in nursing, Occupational Therapy, Health Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Our University is transforming before our eyes!
These developments are certainly exciting and energizing, yet they do not detract from the fact that the primary reason I am here at USM and serving as your president is because of you, our students. I have met so many of you over the past year – at sporting events, theatre and music productions, on the sidewalks and in the hallways at our campuses, at dinner at my house, and through many other events. I enjoyed learning about you and your aspirations, and you are nothing short of inspirational. You give me hope for the future, and you make me proud to serve as your president.
I look forward to meeting more of you in the year ahead. There are many opportunities for us to connect. I will attend fall sporting events. I will run with my dog Elbow on the Gorham campus. I will be eating in the new dining area in the McGoldrick Center and Brooks dining hall. I will be on all three of our campuses. Wherever you see me, please introduce yourself. You – our students – make USM what it is: a place of excellence, inquiry, innovation, and community.
Welcome to the new school year – and step into our future!
Warm regards,
President Edmondson
