The St. Joseph’s College men’s soccer team exploded for three goals in a 15 minute span early in the second half en route to a 4-1 victory over the USM in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win improved the Monks overall mark to 4-2-0. The Huskies are winless through five matches this season.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Monks got on the board in the 51st minute as senior back Eamonn Harrigan lofted a wind-aided, 45-yard free kick over USM senior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass.) for his second goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, rookie Greg Jentgen beat a USM defender at the end line, eluded a charging Kreps and knocked home an eight yard shot for his first collegiate goal. Sophomore Matt Barlion capped the Monks’ scoring outburst when he ran onto a beautiful diagonal through pass from freshman Dan McIntyre and beat Kreps from 12 yards out.
USM registered its first goal of the season when sophomore Matt Powers’ (Strafford, N.H.) free kick from the end line was deflected by a St. Joseph’s defender for an own goal two minutes later.
Senior Paul Robins put the matter to rest converting a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Despite the score, Kreps kept the Huskies in the match throughout the first half and finished with seven saves. Junior Nick Campasano recorded two saves for the Monks. St. Joseph’s had the edge in play rolling up a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
USM will take the field again when they travel to Waterville to battle Thomas College on Tuesday at 4 p.m., and will take on Plymouth State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference matchup in Plymouth N.H.
