Sophomore middle blocker Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) hit for a match-high 12 kills to lead the Daniel Webster College Eagles to a 3-1 win over the USM Huskies in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.
After dropping the first game to the Huskies 15-25, the Eagles rattled off three straight wins 25-14, 25-17 and 25-17 to secure the win in their season opener. The Eagles are now 1-0. Suffering their fifth straight loss since the season’s start, the Huskies are 0-5.
Crawford added three solo blocks and three service aces for the Eagles. Junior setter Caitlyn DePierro (Billerica, Mass.) effectively orchestrated her team’s offense with 27 assists while chipping in with five service aces. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Hill (Hudson, N.H.) added 10 kills, three service aces and one solo block.
USM junior Hallie Noah (Anchorage, AK) paced the Huskies with seven kills, seven assists, three service aces and three solo blocks. Noah hit for a solid .600 hitting percentage with seven kills on 10 attempts and just one error.
USM returns to action on Friday (7:00 p.m.) against the Colby College Mules in the opening game of the Colby Invitational. Daniel Webster faces St. Joseph’s College (Conn.) on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Holyoke College.
