FP: Why did you choose USM over other schools?
JK: I went to Minnesota State University my freshman year to play hockey on a scholarship, but decided to transfer to USM because I wanted to be closer to my family and friends. Also, they didn’t have a lacrosse team out in Minnesota and I missed playing. I thought that transferring to USM would give me an opportunity to play both sports I love, and it did.
FP: At one point in your career you were a two-sport athlete – was playing two sports difficult to balance with the workload you had in your classes?
JK: Not difficult at all. As a student athlete you know your priorities. I find it easier to get work done while in season because I have no time to waste.
FP: How would you describe your athletic experience over the past four years at USM?
JK: There have been some ups and downs, but definitely more ups than downs. I have learned a lot about myself as a person and athlete, and have accomplished more than I thought I would. The people I have met here through athletics have been awesome. There are teammates I will keep in touch with for a long time.
FP: What has been the best moment you’ve had over the past four years?
JK: My sophomore year in lacrosse when we went to the LEC championship! Also, getting rookie of the year my freshmen year and player of the year my junior year.
FP: Who has been your biggest influence at USM?
JK: This is a tough one. There have been a few, but I would like to mention the two lacrosse coaches I’ve had, Sue Frost and Lauren Reid. Also, my teammate Erica Robertson, she has been a great friend.
FP: Now that you’re a senior, what are your plans for the future?
JK: I plan on applying to grad school, and I would love to coach lacrosse. Also, my boy friend of almost four years just proposed to me at the beginning of the month!
FP: Who is your all-time favorite athlete and why?
JK: Bobby Orr, because he was an amazing player! He was both defensive and offensive minded. He was able to carry the puck up to the offensive end and score while still taking care of the defensive side. He was an all around player.
