USM wins second straight LEC and Alliance Championships
The USM men’s indoor track and field team captured their second consecutive Little East Conference and Alliance Championship on Feb. 6 at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham.
The Huskies put up a tremendous effort as they featured ten first place finishes. First place performances for the Huskies came from sophomore Parker Chipman (Pownal), who set an LEC and USM record in the 600-meters in a time of 1:21.88. The 4 x 400 meter relay team made up of Chipman, junior Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Jacob Moore (Bridgton), and senior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham) won in a time of 3:25.51. The 4 x 800 meter relay team garnered a first place finish and included freshman Seth Neuts (Portland), junior Dan Pontbriand (Auburn), sophomore Brett Baker (Sanford), and sophomore John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.). Nuets also won the 1000-meter run.
Junior Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) won the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore Tim Even (Stoneham) claimed the top spot in the 800-meters, and sophomore Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) captured the 3000-meter run. Freshman Anthony Stanton (Acton) won the high jump and sophomore Orion Winkler (Brownfield) claimed victory in the pole vault.
On Feb. 20, the Huskies also turned in a solid team performance as they finish a program best fifth place at the New England DIII Championships, and turned in a 26 place finish out of 33 competitors in the prestigious New England Open Championships hosted by Boston University. The NE Open Championships included athletes from DI, DII, and DIII schools.
USM returns to action this Friday, Mar. 5 as they travel to Smith College for the ECAC DIII New England Championships. 20.49 seconds.
Women’s Ice Hockey
UMass Boston gets the best of Huskies in playoff’s
Senior forward Maria Nasta scored a hat trick and had an assist to pace the #3 seeded UMass Boston Beacons past the #6 seeded USM Huskies 6-2 in an ECAC Women’s East Tournament quarterfinal match-up at the Clark Athletic Center in Dorchester, Mass. on Saturday.
Other Beacon goals were scored by freshman forward Alli Greenberg, junior forward Rachel Sousa, and junior Katie Kirwan. UMass Boston sophomore goalie Leah Hallet stopped 32 of USM 34 shots in the contest.
USM’s goals were scored by sophomore forward Katie Paradis (Rochester, N.H.) and freshman forward Colleen Callahan (Woburn, Mass.). USM sophomore goaltender Kimmy Flanders stopped 25 out of UMass Boston’s 30 shots on net in 59:23 of play.
Men’s Lacrosse
USM loses to Whittier in 2010 season opener
The USM men’s lacrosse team traveled to Whittier, Calif. over Feb. break to take on Whittier College in DIII men’s lacrosse action. Whittier exploded as they went on to beat the Huskies 16-5 at Memorial Field.
Whittier was led by sophomore Daniel McQuade who scored a game-high seven goals to propel his team to the victory. Other WU goals were scored by Mark Cuthbertson who netted four goals, sophomore Lee Oshnock who scored three goals, and sophomores Charlie Fisher and Sam Russell who each tallied a goal of their own.
USM’s goals were scored by sophomore Kyle Baker (Kennebunk) who scored a team-high three goals, and junior Tim Bryant (Peterborough, N.H.) had a goal of his own and an assist. Freshman Mark White (Oakville, Ont.) also provided USM with a goal. Sophomore goalie Kyle Dussault (Lewiston) made four saves for USM.
USM will be back in action as they host the University of New England in their home opener at Memorial Field in Portland on Mar. 12.
