A female student was assaulted and robbed near the intersection of School and Church Streets in Gorham in the early hours of Monday, Feb. 1 while returning to the Gorham campus, according to a campus safety alert sent out last Monday.
According to police, the student reported she fell to the ground after the unidentified male struck her in the face. He then took cash and other items from her wallet and was last seen heading in the direction of Main Street.
Police would not release the victim’s name. They didn’t know where she was coming from when she was attacked.
The suspect was described as a white male in his early to mid-20s with brown hair and a beard. According to police, the suspect is very thin, approximately 5’8″ tall, and was wearing a black jacket and dark pants at the time.
Lt. Ron Saindon of the USM Police said the victim reported the assault to his department, who referred it to Gorham Police since it occurred off campus. The case is still under investigation.
Craig Hutchinson, vice president of student and university life, said campus police were on high alert after the incident. “There certainly was increased awareness by our police based on the proximity to campus,” he said. He was unaware on Sunday of any arrests or developments in the case.
The Gorham Police officer handling the case was not immediately available for comment on Sunday.
