Ladies, are you looking for a girls’ night out movie? Tired of the same old chick flicks? You know, the ones with a really obvious plot line and poorly written jokes? Despite the fact that this film is aimed at a middle-aged female audience, “It’s Complicated” is the type of movie that will make you laugh until you cry.
Featuring a star-studded cast, “It’s Complicated” follows the story of divorced couple Jane and Jake, played by Meryl Streep (“Julie and Julia”) and Alec Baldwin (“30 Rock”) respectively, who find themselves having an affair after spending time together before their son’s college graduation. To complicate the matter, Jane starts seeing Adam, played by Steve Martin (“The Pink Panther”), a recently divorced architect. Torn between her suave ex-husband and her genuine, yet nerdy new beau, Jane finds herself in an awkward position as she tries to figure out who she wants to be with, all the while keeping the affair from her children.
Perhaps the best thing about this film is that it isn’t the usual romantic comedy. Whereas in most movies it is incredibly apparent who the lead will end up with, “It’s Complicated” keeps its audience guessing right until the very end. Will she pick charming but careless Jack, or oblivious although sweet Adam? Both characters’ affections seem sincere, and Meryl Streep gives a truly convincing portrayal of a woman who just can’t make up her mind.
This film was remarkably well cast. Meryl Streep captures Jane’s neurotic breakdowns and caring nature perfectly. She and Alec Baldwin have fantastic chemistry, providing enough sexual tension and hilarious quarrels to make any movie-goer fall out of their seat laughing.
You don’t want to miss “It’s Complicated.” This movie has been out for awhile, and won’t be in theaters much longer. In other words, hurry and get yourself to the theater before it’s too late! But don’t worry, if you don’t get a chance to see it in theaters, this movie is definitely one worth buying.
