Morin records 100th win as Huskies place fourth in the Ted Reese Invitational
USM senior wrestling captain Mike Morin (Fryeburg) earned his 100th career win as he stormed through the 165-pound bracket, helping lead the Huskies to a fourth place finish at the Ted Reese Invitational on Saturday at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham.
Morin went a perfect 3-0 on the day as he defeated Benjamin Speicher of Trinity 15-5, won by injury default over Angel Mazara of American International College, and handled Plymouth State’s Seth Carter in the championship match in a time of 2:15. Morin, who is USM’s lone All-American after garnering the honor last year, is now an impressive 101-16 in his career.
Junior Billy Cole (Madbury, NH) went on to win the 133-pound bracket after he pinned Sean Mooney of the University of New Hampshire in a time of 2:29 in his first match, brought down Western New England’s Alex Morganstern in 2:10, and defeated Western New England’s Anthony Medina in an 8-0 major decision in the championship match.
Plymouth State took the team crown in the contest with 91.2 points, followed by American International with 90.5 points, Trinity with 84.5 points, and USM with 79 total points.
The USM wrestling team will be back in action this Saturday as they join Bridgewater State and American International in a meet hosted by Roger Williams.
Women’s Basketball
Lady Colonials topple Huskies
The USM women’s basketball team took on Western Connecticut State University in their first conference game of the season Saturday afternoon, losing to the Colonials 70-50 at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham.
Western Connecticut had three players in double figures in the win over USM. Junior guard Heather Lee poured in a game-high 21 points, six rebounds and two assists to lead the Colonials.
Junior guard Karli Spera contributed 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals, and junior center Melissa Teel chipped in a double-double that featured 12 points and 15 rebounds.
USM freshman forward Curran Leighton (Dover, NH) had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Huskies in the loss, while senior guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan) and junior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay) each scored 11 points.
The loss puts USM at 4-3 on the season. The Huskies will play next at Salem State College on Wednesday.
Men’s Basketball
Western Connecticut edges out USM
The USM men’s basketball team faced the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in their first conference game of the year in Gorham on Saturday. The Huskies lost in a shootout 87-83.
Western Connecticut sophomore guard DaQuan Brooks scored 26 points leading five Colonial players who were all in double figures. Junior Center John Phillips joined sophomore center Leroy Mayers as they each tossed in 13 points, and junior forward David Addy added 12 points for the Colonials.
Junior guard Cortez Isaac (Washington, D.C.) scored 37 points, leading all scorers in the contest, and contributed seven rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, FL) poured in 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The loss was USM’s fourth straight as they fall to 1-6 on the season. USM will try to snap the losing streak when they travel to Farmington on Monday to play the University of Maine at Farmington.
Isaac honored as LEC Player of Week
Junior guard Cortez Isaac (Washington, D.C.) was named the Little East Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 29. Isaac has won the conference award twice in as many weeks.
In two games last week, Isaac averaged 31 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1 steal. He is averaging 30.2 points, 6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.6 steals on the season for the 1-6 Huskies. Isaac is shooting 51.7 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from behind the arc.
