Wrestling swipes sixth place finish at Roger Williams Invitational
The USM wrestling team opened up their 2009-2010 season by earning a sixth place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, RI on Saturday.
Senior and number one ranked DIII wrestler Mike Morin (Fryeburg) and freshman Cody Byrd (Londonderry, NH) started the season out strong as they each placed first in their respective weight classes.
Morin, who became USM’s first ever All-American last year, took home the 165-pound bracket as he got the best out of Messiah’s Trent Zempel in a tough 3-2 decision. The young but confident Byrd started his career off with a bang by beating out Roger William’s Mike Monson 5-3 to win the 157-pound bracket.
USM Peter Gilman (Alfred) fought hard for a second place finish in the 141-pound bracket, and junior Billy Cole (Madbury, NH) placed fourth in the 133-pound bracket.
USM wrestling will continue their 2009-2010 season on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational.
UNE rolls to win over Huskies in ECAC Quarterfinal
The USM field hockey team continued their season in the ECAC Division III Tournament after losing in the LEC Tourney, as they lost to the UNE Nor’easters 5-2 in quarterfinal game in Biddeford on Nov. 11.
UNE senior forward Taryn Flagg scored two goals and added an assist to a tremendous performance that led the second seeded Nor’easters by the seventh seeded Huskies. Flagg helped UNE get off to a quick start when she fired a pass to sophomore forward Brianna Tupper who knocked it by USM goalie Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth) just 2:18 into the game, for her 13th goal of the season.
UNE junior forward Michaela Franey made the score 2-0 in the 26th minute, and Flagg increased the lead to 3-0 in the 30th minute off an assist from Franey. The score then became 4-0 in UNE’s favor when junior midfielder Cassandra Bushey scored an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute.
USM came out strong in the second half as they scored the first two goals when sophomore forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore Falls) notched her seventh goal of the season in the 53rd minute off an assist from sophomore Heidi Swett (Turner). Senior forward Catilin Albert (Scarborough) scored the second USM goal in the 61st minute off an assist from classmate India Lowe (Gloucester, MA).
Just when USM seemed to be controlling play, Flagg stopped their momentum when she scored her second goal of the game in the 64th minute off an assist from Bushey for her 19th goal of the season.
Despite the emotional feelings Lowe and her fellow senior classmates felt, she ended her career by setting two school records. The senior forward set USM records for both single season and career assists. Lowe finished her four-year stint with the Huskies field hockey team with 24 assists, and set the single season record by tallying 12 assists this season. Lowe’s assist in the loss to UNE also marked the 100th point of her career.
The USM field hockey team ended the year with a 10-11 overall record.
