The Holy Cross Crusaders remain undefeated after putting away the Huskies 3-2 in an Eastern College Athletic Conference match up on Tuesday night at the Hart Center in Worcester.
The Crusaders, who are now 3-0-0, struck first when junior Christina D’Ambrogio (Toronto, ONT) snuck a shot passed freshman goalkeeper Molly Passerini (Wakefield, MA) at 4:41 in the first period. Although the score remained stagnant for the next 20 minutes of play, Holy Cross continued to pounce offensively, eventually taking a two-goal lead at 4:46 in the second period, thanks to a power play goal by Senior Lisa Wilson (Corunna, ONT).
The Huskies clawed back though and eventually netted a goal later in the 2nd period when sophomore Katie Paradis (Rochester, NH) nabbed a power play goal to put the Huskies within one. Freshmen Kailey Bubier (Auburn) and Nanci Crossman (Livonia, MI) were credited with the assists.
The Crusaders shook off the goal and downed the hopes of a come back when Wilson dumped the puck off to senior Kathryn O’Connor (Brookfield, CT) who scored midway through the third period. Shortly after, the Huskies pulled Passerini from the net in hopes to cut the Crusaders lead. The move paid off, as sophomore Kylie Blasen (Okemos, MI) scored at 18:27 to make the score 3-2. Unfortunately, the Huskies ran out of time, finishing the game a point down with only 22 shots on goal to Holy Cross’ 30.
Huskies halt St. Michaels in OT for first win
The USM women’s ice hockey team was back in action as they traveled to South Burlington, VT to take on the Purple Knights of St. Michael’s College in an Eastern College Athletic Conference match-up Friday night. The Huskies succeeded in the bout as they buried the Knights in overtime 3-2 for their first victory of the season.
St. Michael’s struck first as Purple Knight senior Crystal Sarno fired a shot past USM goaltender Molly Passerini (Wakefield, MA). Just 25 seconds later the Huskies clawed their way back when sophomore forward Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI.) tied the game at one with her third goal of the season.
The Huskies claimed the lead at 16:38 in the second period when sophomore forward Kylie Blasen (Okemos, MI.) netted her third goal of the season in a 4-on-3 power play. Blasen took passes from junior defender and co-captain Mary Vaughan (Brunswick) and sophomore forward Jana Sacco (Niagra Falls, ONT). Sarno events the score again as she poketed her second goal in the game, also coming from a power play18:25 in the second period.
As time ticked away, regulation ended with the score at 2-2, sending the game into sudden death overtime. At 1:34 of overtime, Blasen slipped her second goal of the game past SMC goalie Alysia Goldman to propel the Huskies to a hard fought win, a claim a team leading four goals on the season. Blasen redirected a pass from sophomore forward Joanna Gaube (Woodstock, CT) that quickly slid past Goldman.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Nov. 20 as they travel north to Brunswick to take on the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a 5:30 p.m. start at the new Sidney J. Watson Arena.
