Huskies shut out by Western Connecticut in conference tournament
The USM women’s soccer team’s season ended last Tuesday in Connecticut with a 2-0 loss to fourth-seeded Western Connecticut State University in the first round of the Little East Conference Championship Tournament. The Huskies end the season with a 4-15-0 record while the Colonials improve to 10-9-1.
Western Connecticut’s first goal came in the 32nd minute when freshman Tracy Sales (Cumberland, RI) took a centering pass from senior Nicole Sieber (Newton, CT) and struck it past USM senior keeper Allison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) for the lead. Bradley faced a tough Colonial attack which outshot USM 33-6 in her final collegiate game. She held her own, making 10 saves in the game.
Even Bradley couldn’t stop a wind blown corner kick from senior Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, MA) that curved into the net in the 60th minute. Western Connecticut keeper Molly Miller only needed to make two saves for the shutout.
USM field hockey’s season ends in overtime
The sixth-seeded Huskies lost in overtime to third-seeded Fitchburg State College Falcons in Little East Conference field hockey tournament quarterfinal game Tuesday in Fitchburg, MA. Senior Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, MA/Tewksbury Memorial) scored the winning goal for the Falcons who advance to the semi-finals of the tournament with a record of 14-4. The Huskies record falls to 10-10 for the season.
Both teams were shut out in the first half before Fitchburg State broke the deadlock with an unassisted goal from junior Mari Roma (Foxborough, MA) in the 54th minute. However the lead didn’t last long as USM answered two minutes later with a goal from senior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough) off an assist by sophomore forward Haley Carter (Saco)
USM senior goalie Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth) faced pressure early in the overtime period when the Falcons had four consecutive penalties before Bartalamia ended the game in the 79th minute from a pass by junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, MA.) Hill ended with seven saves in the game, while Falcon’s junior keeper Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, MA) made three.
Huskies lose season opener to Castleton State
Castleton State College took the win Friday night when senior forward Mary Anne Diehm (Rockaway Beach, NY) scored with 1:15 remaining, giving the Spartans (1-2-0; 1-0-0) their first win of the season.
Castleton State scored first with a power-play goal when freshman Eileen Coyne (North Attleboro, MA) redirected a shot by freshman forward Jade Werger (Maple Ridge, BC) past USM junior goalie Jackie Zarb (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) in the second period. The Huskies leveled the score 51 seconds later when sophomore forward Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI) placed a snap shot over the shoulder of freshman goalie Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, MD) off an assist from junior defenseman Mary Vaughn (Brunswick.)
When it looked like it would be headed for overtime, Diehm deflected a shot from the right wing boards by Coyne that beat USM goalie Zarb, who ended with 16 saves. Dembowski made 26 saves in the win for Castleton State. USM lead in shots on goal 27-18 for the game.
Second period goal gives Cadets win
After scoring three goals in the first period, the Huskies were shutout, letting Norwich University take the winning lead in the second period. Freshman Courtney Parisot’s (Watertown, CN) late second period goal broke the 3-3 tie to give the Cadets the win, improving them to 3-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league. USM falls to 0-2-0 overall and in the league after the ECAC Women’s East game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
Both offenses exploded in the first period, scoring three goals apiece. However the rest of the game only saw one more goal scored, but it proved decisive. Parisot beat USM freshman goalie Molly Passerini (Wakefield, MA) late in the second period off an assist by junior Kelsey Cone (Manchester, VT).
The Huskies struck first with goals by sophomore Kylie Blasen (Okemos, Mich.) and freshman Kailey Bubier (Auburn). The Cadets responding with two goals of their own scored by sophomore Amanda Wilks (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Cone.
Sophomore Danielle Ward (Lansing, MI) also scored for USM and sophomore Brittany Michaud (Lewiston) scored for the Cadets. USM plays next on Tuesday (7:00pm) at Holy Cross.
Foley garners fifth LEC Rookie of the Week honor
Freshman women’s cross-country runner Jennie Foley (Bangor) swiped her fifth LEC Rookie of the Week award on Nov. 2nd after her outstanding performance in the LEC and New England Alliance Championships last weekend.
Foley was the first freshman finisher out of the 126 participants placing eighth overall, and also receiving All-LEC and All-New England Alliance honors.
The women’s cross-country team will return to action on Nov. 14th, as they will be competing in the Division III New England Regional Championships in Cumberland.
Men’s cross-country places seventh in ECAC Division III Championships
Senior John Letendre (Rumford, RI) paced the USM men’s cross-country team this past weekend as he placed 21st out of 296 runners in the ECAC Division III Championship race in Wlliamstown, MA. The Huskies snatched seventh place overall out of the 43 schools, marking their best finish ever in the race.
Letendre trekked the course in a time of 27 minutes, 35.8 seconds. The rest of the scoring for USM was rounded out by sophomore Connor Bibb (Jericho, VT) who was the second finisher for the Huskies crossing the finish line 34th overall in a time of 27 minutes and 53.4. Senior Dan Pontbriand (Auburn) swiped the 47th overall place in a time of 28 minutes, 10.6 seconds and sophomore Eric Neuts (Portland) and senior Saylor Jacobs placed 59th and 60th, in times of 28:24 and 28:31.
The Huskies will resume their unforgettable 2009 season as they host the NCAA Division III New England Men’s and Women’s Championship at the Twin Brook Recreational Center in Cumberland on Nov. 14.
