Firstly, why did you choose USM? Did you apply to many other schools? What are you majoring in? Do you enjoy it?
Coming to USM was a pretty easy decision. I got accepted to other schools but financially for my parents and myself, USM was the most convenient. Another big reason was the success and the development of some of the previous runners that have come through the cross country and track programs. I saw how much faster they had gotten going through the training here and I wanted to be a part of it. I’m currently majoring in Sports Management; being in athletics it was definitely an easy decision to pick that major.
This is your third year running for the cross-country team, what’s been different about this year?
Personally, I think this year has been the chance to train with 20 or so other guys that are very similar in talent as myself. It makes for a very competitive team. The depth on this team is just crazy, our coach has done a great job bringing in guys on this team that could make us better. For example my personal best time in a 5 mile distance is 27:29 and I’m currently anywhere between the 14th and 18th guy on this team, where on other teams in the state or in the LEC a time like that could be in their top 5.
You’re apart of a fraternity, Phi Kappa Sigma. How involved does the organization get with athletics or the university?
Being a part of a Greek organization we encourage our members to get involved as much as possible with programs on campus. If you look at student senate, the Greek population is very high, in fact I believe a Greek member is our current student body president. Our members try to get to as much athletic events as possible, more so if there is a brother like myself on a team. So with more winter team home games coming up look for the Phi Kap sweat shirts in the stands.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Five years from now I think is still up in the air. I’ve lived in Gorham my whole life, so I would hope that there would be a nice change in scenery in the future, but you never know.
How are you feeling about your senior year so far? Is there a bittersweet feeling that goes along with the finality of your school career?
As of right now I’ll be a few credit hours short of graduating in May so I’ll most likely have to do another semester next year. Luckily for me I have another season of cross country to use, so it would be nice to come back and help the team win another LEC title before I do end up graduating. But knowing that I’m only two semesters away from walking away from USM with a degree means a lot to myself and my family, so it will be nice when the time comes.
