The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee put on the 15th annual Halloween Party at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham on Friday night.
After the student-athletes decorated the gymnasium with everything from ghostly paper streams to giant inflatable slides, the festivities kicked off and children and parents alike were able to enjoy the night’s activities. Joined together by free food, face paintings, and costume prizes, the annual Halloween party provided a great opportunity for the citizens of Southern Maine to stay in touch with their home town athletes and coaches.
Jim Soules, a freshman lacrosse player from Scarborough, stood by the bouncy house as the children jumped and tumbled about.
“This is my first year but I’m enjoying it,” said Soules. “It seems like a good way to keep the entire Gorham community in the know when it comes to [USM] athletics.”
The party also benefits from any donations given by community members and surrounding businesses. Although these are minimal, they are helpful. But what SAAC prides themselves off of most is providing a fun and festive atmosphere for the supporters who attend games regularly and keep USM athletics thriving. It also gives the children an extra day to celebrate the sugar filled holiday, while giving them the chance to meet our Husky athletes off of the court, playing field, or ice rink.
As the fall season begins to wind down, playoffs for soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf, volleyball and tennis come closer. And soon, basketball, ice hockey, indoor track, and wrestling will be in full swing; allowing a varied display of spectacular sports action to unify the community of USM even more so. For now, as the 15th Halloween party comes to a close, the athletes will tear down the decorations and transform the gymnasium back to its natural and competitive setting.
Until next year, of course.
