The St. Joseph’s College Monks scored four unanswered goals to rally past the USM women’s soccer team 4-1 in a non-conference game played at Windham High School last Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless 31 minutes, USM freshman forward Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth) put the Huskies on the board after she took a pass from junior midfielder Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston) to score her fifth goal of the season.
The Monks struck to tie the contest in the 33rd minute as senior defender Lauren Hagerman’s (Scarborough) shot on goal was misplayed by USM defenders into the net. Hagerman’s goal marked her first of the season.
St. Joe’s didn’t stop there, as they went on to take the lead for good when senior midfielder Brianna Jordan (Scarborough) took a cross from junior forward Mikayla Call (Portland) and booted it into the net for her sixth goal of the season to make the score 2-1 in the 55th minute. St. Joe’s then added two more insurance goals in the 65th and the 69th minutes. Hagerman continued her stellar play during the game when she fired a cross into the box where senior midfielder/forward Anna Willis (Gorham) slipped it past USM goalkeeper Allison Bradley (Aukland, New Zealand) for her second goal in 2009. The last St. Joseph’s goal was scored by freshman Katie Chambers (Hampden) as she tallied her fifth goal in her rookie campaign.
Bradley was kept busy by the aggressive Monk offense as she went on to make 11 saves on St. Joe’s 19 shots on net.
The USM women’s soccer team, which is now 4-13-0 overall, played their last regular season at Keene State on Saturday losing 4-1. They await to see their opponent in the 2009 Little East Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The Huskies have improved greatly since their season opener, and look to bring that improved play and teamwork into the 2009 postseason.
