Women’s soccer takes care of UMass Dartmouth
In a game that looked destined for overtime, the University of Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth women’s’ soccer teams combined for three goals in the closing minutes, turning a 1-1 tie into a 3-2 USM victory. With six minutes remaining in regulation, the Corsairs scored the go-ahead goal, but their lead was short lived. Just 24 seconds later, USM junior Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston) netted a goal. Just under a minute and a half later, DeHaan set-up freshman Catherine Wise (Cape Elizabeth) for the game-winning goal, snapping the Huskies’ four-game losing skid and moving their record to 2-8-0.
Women’s tennis skunks Thomas College
The USM women’s soccer team secured their fifth win (5-4) of the season with a 9-0 destruction of Thomas College last week. With the win, USM has guaranteed their most successful season since 2003, when they finished 6-5 overall. In a feat rarely seen at the collegiate ranks, the Huskies beat the Terrier 6-0 in all six singles matches and yielded only one point in their three doubles matches. Freshman Kristine Brammer (Littleton, NH) led the surging Huskies by winning the top singles match.
USM Golf claims home tourney
Led by an even par performance by sophomores Brian Moskevich (Buxton) and Dan Chadwick (Gorham), the USM golf team claimed the Southern Maine Cup at Sable Oaks last week. The pair’s score of 70 was an exceptionally strong showing in the tournament’s challenging format which combines six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble and six holes of alternate shot. With subsequent scores of 75 and 76, the Huskies’ total of 221 (11-over-par) was ten strokes better than second place UMaine Farmington and 15 strokes better than third place University of New England.
