USM Stomps on Warriors
The USM field hockey team came into Mansfield, CT prepared as they rolled to a 7-2 win over Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference match-up on Saturday.
The Huskies were led by sophomore forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, ME), freshman forward Bethany Schleh (Gorham, ME), and freshman forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, ME) who each tallied two goals in the game.
USM’s first goal was an unassisted one scored by senior co-captain India Lowe (Gloucester, MA) in the 29th minute of play. Four minutes later the Huskies increased their lead to 3-0 with goals from Schleh and McDaniel in the 32nd and 33rd minute. McDaniel scored her second goal just 34 seconds into the second half off an assist from Lowe. Bubier scored goals in the 55th and 65th minutes and Schleh notched her second goal in the 69th minute.
USM’s goalkeeper and senior co-captain Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, ME) made three saves on Eastern Connecticut’s eight shots.
The Huskies will host Worcester State on Wednesday at 4:00PM on Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham.
Volleyball
USM Earns First Victory; Lady Huskies shutout Pine Manor
The USM volleyball team earned their first win this season and since the 2006 season, as they went on to the down Pine Manor College 3-0 at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham on Wednesday. USM beat the Gators in the three games with scores of 25-14, 25-10, and 25-13.
Senior co-captain Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, NH) led the Huskies with a match-high 11 kills, five digs and four service aces. Sophomore Laurie Boulay (Biddeford, ME) recorded a match-high 15 assists and also posted four aces, and a kill to help navigate the offense. Senior middle blocker Cassi Sticht (Meredith, NH) showcased a solid performance in the match as she contributed four digs, four kills, four aces, and three blocks.
The USM volleyball team will continue their 2009 schedule at the Salem State Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Men’s Soccer
Huskies Upend Plymouth State
The USM men’s soccer team won their second game in a row and earned their first conference win of the season as they beat Plymouth State College 2-1 on Saturday in Gorham.
Junior transfer Chris Kain (Kennebunk, ME) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as he broke a 1-1 tie in the 88th minute. Kain came sweeping across the middle to beat a PSU defender, and took a pass from senior midfielder Peter McHugh (Scarborough, ME) that he redirected past Plymouth goalie Bjorn Ohlsson for his fist career collegiate goal. McHugh posted another assist when he booted a pass to team-leading goal scorer Nick Johnson who slipped it by Ohlsson in the 53rd minute to increase the Husky lead to 1-0.
USM senior goalkeeper David Kreps made two saves on Plymouth State’s 12 shots in a heated conference match-up.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday Sept. 30, when they travel to Colby College in a 4:30PM non-conference game.
Women’s Tennis
Anchorwomen Fend Off Huskies
The USM women’s tennis team dropped an in-conference match on Saturday as Rhode Island College edged them 5-4.
RIC won four out of six singles points after falling behind 2-1 in the doubles matches to take the competition. Southern Maine sophomore Katelyn Oullete (Lewiston, ME) and freshman Tegan Talbot (Topsham, ME) worked together to take number one doubles defeating Julie Bannon and Gabriela Batek of RIC, 9-7. Oulette and Talbot then went on to take the only singles victories for USM to lead the Huskies in a tough loss.
The Huskies will remain play in their 2009 season as they travel to Thomas College in Waterville on Tuesday, for a non-conference women’s tennis match.
