McHugh Leads USM to Second Win
Senior forward Peter McHugh (Portland, ME) scored the lone goal in a defensive battle, as the USM men’s soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory over Worcester State in a non-conference men’s soccer match-up in Gorham on Saturday. The goal came in the 49th minute when a free kick from the left wing side of the 18 yard box off the foot of junior Nick Johnson (South Portland, ME), found the head of McHugh who put it in from 10 yards out for his first goal of the season. Senior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, MA) tallied 4 saves in the remaining 41 minutes, to record his first shutout of the season. The win marks the second straight for the Huskies, as they come into this week with a 2-2 record with match-ups at Bowdoin College on Wednesday at 4:00PM, and on Saturday at in-conference opponent Umass Boston at 1:00PM.
Women’s Soccer
MIT Engineers Surge Past USM
The MIT women’s soccer team came into Gorham on Saturday and extended their winning streak to two, as they went on to the USM 4-1 on the USM Soccer Field. Emily Kuo, Alisha Lussiez, and Merricka Livingstone all scored unassisted goals within four minutes of each other late in the second half, to propel the Engineer’s victory. MIT’s first goal was scored by Katie Pesce off an assist from Liz Theurer at the 4:01 minute mark. USM’s only goal was scored by sophomore Bridget Fitzgerald (Concord, NH) in the 88th minute. Kat Rothe (Turner, ME) recorded five saves on MIT’s 19 shots, and her counterpart Katy Olesnavage made 3 saves on Southern Maine’s 6 shots.
Men’s Cross Country
Huskies are Perfect as Jasud Sets Course Record at UNE Invitational
The USM men’scross country team scored a perfect 15 at the UNE Invitational on Saturday in Biddeford as they went on to take the overall team title. Senior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, ME) won the individual crown while setting at course record with a time of 25:58. The first nine runners to finish the race were Huskies, including senior Captain Justin Richardson (Turner, ME) who came in second overall and also broke the former course record with a time of 26:08. The rest of the scoring field was rounded out by an impressive sophomore class with John Vallo (Beacon, NY), Alex Gomes (Peabody, MA), Timothy Even (Stoneham, ME), and Noah Schoneberg (Limington, ME) who finishing third through sixth overall, and senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, ME) who finished seventh. The talented men’s cross country team look to test their wheels in their next race on Saturday at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational in North Dartmouth, Mass.

USM Downs Gordon for Second Straight Win, Drops One to UMass Dartmouth
Senior Captain Erica Robertson and last weeks LEC Rookie of the week Samantha Tardif (Biddeford, ME) combined to score four of the teams six points, in a 6-2 win over non-conference foe Gordon last Wednesday at the Gorham High School courts. Robertson and Freshman Laura Bell won the number three doubles match beating Kallie Garret and Hannah Osgood of Gordon, 8-6. Roberston went on to beat Jessica Greenwood in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Tardif joined fellow freshman Kristine Brammer (Littleton, NH) to take number two doubles 8-0, over Gordon’s Greenwod and Andrea Metayer. The two remaining singles points were scored by sophomore Katelyn Oullette (Lewiston, ME) and freshman Tegan Talbot (Topsham, ME).
On Saturday, Umass Dartmouth handed the Huskies the loss with a 7-2 victory in an in-conference match-up in Gorham. USM’s scoring was rounded off by sophomore Katelyn Oullete, who won number two singles over UMD’s Amber Ubertini 6-1, 6-2, and Robertson and freshman Kimberly Hilchey (Warren, ME) who took number 3 doubles 8-4.
Field Hockey
USM Loses heartbreaker
The University of Southern Maine field hockey team lost a tough one on a late second half goal from Framingham State College in a non-conference game at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham on Saturday. Framingham State freshman forward Erica Fisher picked up a loose ball off a scramble late in the second half scoring the winning goal to lead the Rams to a 3-2 victory. Other Framingham goals were scored by junior forward Kristen Sacco in the 14th minute which was unassisted, and Kali Barrett who notched an unassisted goal of her own in the 40th minute. Southern Maine goals were scored by freshman Kailey Bubier (Aubern, ME) at the 9:14 mark and by senior forward Catilin Albert (Scarborough, ME) who tallied an unassisted score in the 62nd minute. The Huskies remain their schedule on Wednesday when the UMaine Farmington Beavers come to Gorham for a 4:00PM game.
Golf
USM Golf Places 4th and 3rd in Last Week’s Tourney’s Friday, and finished third at the UNE Invitational in Biddeford to top off a busy week on the links.
In the Terrier Invitational, USM tallied up a total of 339 strokes and was led by sophomore Cody Berkowitz (Saco, ME) who shot a nine over par, 81, and was only three shots off the winners Nick Waltz of UMF and Kevin Byrne of Husson University, who both turned in a 78. Senior Ryan Daley (York, Maine) scored second for USM with an 11 over 83, and Sophomore Zach Porter (Keene, NH) tallied an 86.
In the UNE Invitational on Saturday, Daley and USM sophomore Brian Moskevich (Buxton, ME) each turned in a nine over 79 to lead the Huskies to a third place finish. The Huskies amassed at total of 328 strokes only behind Endicott College who finished with 309 total strokes, and University of New England finished with 324. Sophomores Berkowitz and Porter rounded out the scoring the Huskies with scores of 84 and 86. The Golf team will remain play this Saturday as they will travel to Brunswick to play in the Bowdoin Invitational.
Volleyball
USM Drops Match to MMA in Castine
The Maine Maritime Academy women’s volleyball team pounced on the Huskies as they won 3-0 in a non-conference match in Castine, ME last Tuesday night. MMA freshman setter Jenn Dixon set a school record with 38 assists to lead her team to victory as they won 25-20, 25-15, 25-13. Mariner Outside hitter Chelsea Ward recorded a match-high 17 kills on 24 attempts, and hitter Amy Young also added 14 kills and 8 digs. USM’s outside hitter and Captain Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, NH) led her team with four kills and eleven digs in the match. The Huskies next match will be held at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham on Tuesday at 7:00PM against the Beavers of UMaine Farmington.
