There were high expectations for senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent) and junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford) heading into this fall’s cross country season. Both were slated to be their team’s leader and top performers in the conference.
So far those expectations have been met. Both athletes were recently named LEC Cross Country Runners of the Week for their performances in the week ending Sept. 14.
Cyr was recognized for her winning performance in the University of New England Cross Country Invitational, where she came from behind and overtook five runners after the two-mile mark to capture the crown.
She completed the hilly, 5,000-meter course in 21:05. In just her second year on the team, this marked the first time Cyr had been honored by the conference.
Jasud, an All-New England performer, was also honored by the LEC for the first time. Running the five-mile course at Rotary Park in Biddeford in 28:01, Jasud followed in Cyr’s footsteps by capturing the individual title at the UNE event.
This is the second event that Jasud has won this season. His first win came in the St. Joseph’s Running Monks Early Bird Invitational earlier this month.
Behind Cyr and Jasud’s efforts both teams were victorious at the event. The women’s team captured the top three spots in cruising to their victory, while the men’s team placed the top four on the men’s side.
