A Falmouth woman was arrested outside the Sullivan Gym last Thursday afternoon after a Portland Police Department drug dog was called to the scene. Somayeh Kargar, 22, was arrested for having May 2007 tags on her license plates. Having tags older than 90 days is a misdemeanor, according to USM Police Lt. Kevin Conger.
USM officers smelled drugs in her vehicle when she was stopped, and called Portland Police. Although a small bag was confiscated, Lt. Conger thought that there was probably not enough to prosecute her for. “But we still have to weigh it,” said Lt. Conger, “We have to test things, it’s all alleged at this point.”
USM police were in the Sullivan Gym parking lot watching another vehicle, whose owner, a student, was illegally using her mother’s handicapped placard to park in the lot.
While attending to this violation, Kargar’s white Mazda 6 with very expired license tags pulled into the lot to turn around.
“It’s the most excitement we’ve seen in a while!” said Wendy Benson of the recreation department, who watched the action unfold outside her office window. “Drug dogs and everything!”
The student was issued a citation after her mother’s handicap placard was confiscated. Kargar, who police do not believe is a USM student, was taken to the Cumberland County jail.
