Women’s hockey finished last week on a three game losing streak that began with a tough 0-3 match against St. Michael’s College.
“Today’s game was the second of the weekend,” said coach John Lauziere following that loss, “last night they exerted a lot of energy and gave all they could.” The day before, the Huskies had taken their fourth win of the season, blanking Norwich College 3-0. The game versus St. Michael’s was the fourth game in five days, and it showed.
“The team just wasn’t there to pick up the rebounds,” said Lauziere, noting that each of the goals scored against junior goalie Emily Barrett (Westport, MA), came after an initial save.
The team seemed strong in the offensive zone, forwards seemed uncommonly adept at knowing where their teammates were on the ice, and passes were connecting, but the puck rarely entered the critical scoring area.
“There was a lot of perimeter play,” said Lauziere, “but it’s always a battle to score.”
Barrett, who made 26 saves in the game, seemed less frustrated than some of her teammates. “We played fine, we were unlucky and just couldn’t score. We’re not gonna win games if we can’t score! We’re playing hard and getting shots, we’re outplaying teams just somehow we don’t win. We try really hard.”
Senior forward Amy McNally (East Waterboro) was less forgiving. She stormed off the ice at each break, slamming her stick against the glass on her way out the door, and left the locker room with teary, frustrated eyes. When if she would comment about the game, she stamped toward the door, turned and shook her head, “I don’t think so.”
