Seven first place finishes give Huskies the crown
The men’s indoor track team used seven first place finishes to outscore three other schools en route to capturing the Reggie Poyau Invitational crown at Bowdoin College. USM posted a whopping 128 points, followed by Bowdoin with 97 and Brandeis University and Connecticut College with 66 and 51 respectively. Seniors Derek Murchie (Windham), Curtis Wheeler (Derby, VT) and Adam Haggerty (Hermon) led a strong contingent of individual competitors that were victorious. Other event winners included junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, NH) in the 200 meter and freshmen Mason Shepherd (Portland) and Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, NH).
Women’s Basketball
Kent gets second Player of the Week award
Junior guard Stacey Kent (Northwood, NH) added yet another accolade to the resume of the nationally ranked women’s basketball team when she was named LEC Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 7-13. Her second time winning the honor this season, Kent averaged 22.5 points per game while shooting a staggering 63.6 percent (14 for 22) from the field and 62.5 (5 for 8) from three-point-range. Her most impressive game of the week came against nationally ranked Eastern Connecticut State she poured in 21 of her 28 points in the second half and outscored Eastern Connecticut 15-4 in the final seven minutes to rally the Huskies by the Warriors. She also had a strong showing in a blowout 98-55 win over instate rival Husson College when she contributed 17 points in four assists. Kent currently leads the LEC in scoring at a 15.4 point per game clip.
Wrestling
Valastro named Wrestler of the Week
Stephen Valastro (Montgomery, NY), a senior co-captain on the USM Wrestling team, was named the Pilgrim Wrestling League’s Wrestler of the Week for his efforts during the week of Jan. 7-13. A recipient of the award last year and a 2007 All-Conference performer, Valastro became the first Husky wrestler to achieve the distinction this season. During the week, Valastro compiled a 4-0 record including two pins, a technical fall and major decision. Wrestling in the 133 pound weight class, Valastro has powered the Husky wrestling squad to a fourth-place ranking in the latest Div. III poll. So far this season, Valastro is 11-2 with four wins by fall and two technical falls. Last season, he was the only USM competitor to qualify for the Div. III National Championships while posting a 28-10 record.
