FP: Why did you come to USM?
Mike: When I was looking, well, it was in-state, it was close to home-I live in Fryeburg-so I liked that part. As far as wrestling goes, I really liked the coaches, and the team was up and coming. You could tell they’d be good.
FP: What is it that you enjoy about wrestling?
Mike: I like how what you put into it is what you get out of it. Wrestling isn’t exactly a team sport, there’s no one really to rely on, and no teammates to blame.
FP: And about the USM program?
Mike: As a team we’re really close, we hang out outside of wrestling. It’s good we all get along, you have more fun that way.
FP: Have you ever gotten any crazy diseases?
Mike: Nothing crazy, but things like ringworm are pretty common, even with washing the mats and showering. Every season, somebody gets it, and we deal with it.
FP: And how do you cut weight? Isn’t that hard?
Mike: Cutting weight is a big part of the sport. I just work hard in practice, and then for a couple days before we weigh in I’ll go for an extra run or two. I’m not cutting as much as I was last year, which makes it easier. I don’t really have a set diet or anything, and we all go out and eat a big meal after weighing in.
FP: Do you get frustrated that your team doesn’t get the recognition that, say, the Women’s basketball team gets?
Mike: Nah, not frustrated. We just haven’t accomplished as much as some of those teams. Until we do, we won’t get the attention. As a whole, wrestling just doesn’t get the same attention as the bigger sports, but that doesn’t bother me.
