The USM men’s golf team,
led by senior James Frost (Brewer),
secured fi rst place two weekends
ago at the Bowdoin College
Invitational. The Huskies team
score of 607 was enough to put
them atop the fourteen-school
leader board. Frost shot a one-over
par 73 on Saturday and Sunday to
take the low medalist title.
Junior Joe Hamilton (Old
Orchard Beach), who tied for fi fth
in the tournament, scored 77 and
75. Sophomore Greg Mitchell
(Durham) shot an opening round
81, but turned things around
Sunday with a 74. Freshman Ryan
Mondor (Old Orchard Beach) fell
one shot short of Mitchell with a
two round total of 156. Freshman
David Murphy (Melrose, Mass.)
completed the Huskies squad
managing a 164.
USM’s closest competitor,
second place Williams College, had
a team total of 613. Kelly Kellert
led the Ephs, shooting a three over
147 for the tournament. Golf Digest
recently ranked Williams College
tenth in the Division Three men’s
golf polls.
Other Maine schools that
competed in the invitational were
Husson (fourth), Bowdoin (fi fth),
St. Jospeh’s (sixth), Bates (tenth),
UNE (eleventh), UMPI (twelfth),
Colby (thirteenth), and UMF
(fourteenth).
Husson’s Russ McGee
(Fairfi eld) and Robby Pickard
(Vassaboro) cracked the top ten in
fi fth and seventh. Brandon Malloy
(Saint Stephen, New Brunswick)
placed fourth, while Jeff Cutter
(Medfi eld, Mass.) was tied for
seventh for Bowdoin.
The Huskies could continue on
the winning track when they travel
to the Waterville Country Club to
compete in the Sid Farr Invitational
on September 17.
