USM overcame a five run deficit to defeat Colby College 10 to 5 at home Wednesday. The Huskies improved to 17 to 6 on the season, while the White Mules continue to search for their first win (0 to 20).
Colby jumped out to an early lead when their first six batters reached base off USM starting pitcher Kyle Fecteau (Biddeford, ME). Mules’ sophomore Andy Carr (Conway, NH) singled to knock in two, and junior Roddy Ames (Cotuit, MA) followed with an RBI double. Their fourth run came on an infield error later in the inning.
The scoring continued for Colby in the second when freshman Sam Kennedy-Smith (Newton, MA) had an RBI single to give the White Mules their fifth and final run. Sophomore Pat Foley (Norwood, MA) relieved Fecteau in the inning and quickly silenced the Mules. Foley allowed only two hits, with three strike outs and no walks in six scoreless innings of work.
The White Mules kept control of the game until a five-run fourth inning sparked the Huskies’ comeback. Colby’s starting pitcher, Andy Carr lost his command after a possible double play ball was fumbled by second baseman Robert Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.), giving the Huskies some momentum. With runners on first and second, Carr walked freshman Eddie Skeffington (Everett, MA) to load the bases. USM sophomore Max Arsenault (Boothbay, ME) stepped to the plate and singled, giving the Huskies their first two runs. Carr beamed the next batter, and gave up consecutive walks, cutting Colby’s lead to only one.
Rosenbaum replaced Carr on the mound with the bases still full and walked the first batter he faced, placing the game in a 5 to 5 tie. Rosenbaum got out of the jam by forcing junior captain Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, ME) to hit into a double play.
The Huskies didn’t look back after the fourth. They put another run on the board in the fifth when a Skeffington single knocked in senior captain Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, ME).
USM added three in the sixth and one in the seventh to eliminate any hope Colby had of making a comeback.
Junior Andrew Portwine (Gorham, ME) finished the game for the Huskies on the mound retiring all but one batter he faced in the final two innings.
Sophomore Ryan Bourque (Sanford, ME) and Eddie Skeffington had two hits each for USM, while Tip Fairchild led the offensive charge with three.
Pat Foley (2 to 0) was credited with the win, while Robert Rosenbaum (0 to 4) was handed the loss.
The Huskies have the opportunity to extend their win streak at home Wednesday against Bates and travel to St. Joseph’s Thursday to take on the Monks.
